Get the strongest lights you can afford! I just got a Tek T5 6x54 watt fixture. I bought mine used, but new they sell for around $250-$300 without the bulbs. You can either go with T5's or Metal Halides. The T5s are cheaper but the Halides will give you a little better coloring and that shimmer effect in the water.

I would look at putting 48" VHO's in there. 4 of them over your tank will give you awesome light, and you should be able to keep anything in there!
With MH's prepare to may need a chiller too!
Oh and do a Retro/DIY kit...save yourself some money! If your not sure on wiring, dont worry its easy to wire up.
