Ive been watching this site for several months as I figure out my semi-new tank here and have found tons of valuable info. There seems to be a wide variety of of people on here with lots of info and i have an off-topic question for anyone who may know the answer. In a recent discussion (the contents of which are not rellevant to this question) about the U.S. military, one person brought it to my attention that nowdays the U.S. Navy actually has more planes in the air than the Airforce. I'm just curious to know if this is true or not and if anyone knows anything about this, I would appreciate your response. thankyou.

Most people that know the answer to this question will also know not to answer it. I find it funny that you finally decide to post one question and its about our military. And you say you have been reading on here for several months? And your join date is 05 Aug 2006. To many red flags with this post. You do not need to know this answer. Appropraite name though.

I think he's talking about actual aircraft that they use on a regular basis. The Airforce hasnt even taken possession of the F22 yet.
It is true tho...the Navy has more aircraft, that are used on a daily basis, that what the Air Force has.
Most of the planes that are flying in the Middle East, right now, are Navy since they're carrier based.

Yeah, but I wouldnt count those as actual aircraft...I only count manned planes.
Plus, in the Navy...we dont have UAV's.

I hate to dissagree but the USAF has active squadrons of the F-22 in service already. Langley AFB as well as Tyndoll AFB are both operationally ready with F-22's....There are other bases as well that are transitioning into thr F-22 as well....Eglin for example.
I would have to say that by the sheer number of actual flying bases, types of aircraft and missions they fly, the USAF has as compared to carriers and flying bases the NAVY has and the missions type flowon by thr USAF as compared to the NAVY, I just do not see how they have more plane in the air. The navy mainly flys the aircraft in a air wing from carriers on deployments in support of an ongoing mission or security of their carrier war group. A carrier has what...80 some acft assigned to it.......which amounts to about 3 flights or so of a typical USAF squadron....nope no way the NAVY has more or flys more aircraft than the USAF does. In the lists above I assume thr C-41 was meant to be C-141. The USAF still has an operational flight of RF-4C aircraft which are used as evaluation/test /chase aircraft at Edwards AFB and NASA which they use to film new aircraft etc tests with... The USAF also has a few F-5's left as well in use with Edwards and there is a bunch of MIG (clueless on designation/type) fighters that was acquired and made into an operational squadron for training etc which is assigned somewhere out west(Nellis or Hill perhaps)

This is knowledge that can be gained on the internet. But Use YOUR brain. I would not tell the world what base has wehat and where you go. How about a little OPSEC!
Thats how people get targeted.
Army has more ships than the Navy does.

No, I wasn't asking about opsec, or anything even remotly sensitive. I should have worded it differently to avoid confusion. I shouldn't have said "in the air". Sorry about that. I think it makes sense that under certain circumstances one branch may have more aircraft in use at the time, and in other circumstances another branch will. I was really just wondering if the Navy really does own, or have in their possesion or whatever, more than the airforce does all together, as this was what the person who brought this up to me was trying to convey. And I think I understand that the answer is no they don't. That the airforce certainly has more aircraft even though it may be possible that the navy may be using more under certain given circumstances. I think this person just thought he could sound smart if he said "the navy has more" and everyone else said "wow really?" Such is a conversatiion at a bar while having some cocktails. Thank you for all the responses.
I think its only fair for those responding here, that you know that somehow people are concerned about the integrity of this question and it's implications on national security. You can find these concerns and my response to them in the thread "Attention" posted by Goblin. I won't address that anymore, but thank you for the answer to my little piece of trivia.
And here's a quote from one of my favorite authors. The character in the book giving the quote is actually a parrot. "People of the world, relax!" Now if you know who wrote that then that would really be something. Thanks again. Take care.
