Ocean sand and water

Hi everyone,
I am planning a vacation to the beach next weekend and wanted to bring back some real ocean water and sand and possible rock, I was told that this was not a good idea by the fish store in my area but thought about getting a second opinion after researching on line. Any suggestions?
Thanks

If you go out far enough from shore the water is usually ok slightly under the surface. As far as sand and rock from a beach? I wouldn't.

I am a Newbie to SWF, but I would take the advice of your LFS and say no "Don't Do It". The reason I say this is because you do not know what kind of Pollutants, Bacteria or Diseases that you might introduce to your system. Your Aquarium is a closed system which has no way of dealing with or taking care of those different things like the open Ocean would. I would not take the risk with money that you have spent on your SWF tank. I know that I would not!!!

Risk far out weigh any benefit if there is one. COST? If you pollute your system you will see that cost go much higher than buying from the LFS. I say dont do it. ROCK?? You could be looking at a fine. Do you know the law in that area?
I see your from TEXAS, how is that OIL SPILL affecting your area???? Reason # whatever that I wouldnt do it.
Hey the sky if falling
Im not negative just convinced. I asked the same questions a long time ago and unless you know all the facts then its generally not a good idea imo.

I too have been advised not to do this by 2 of my LFS for some of the same reasons mentioned above.

Thank you everyone for the help. I just read that the ocean water would put some of the trace minerals back in the aquarium, it had nothing to do w cost and was going to be an issue to get it back in our loaded down suv anyway. I just want all of my fishies to be happy and thought they may enjoy having it. But I think I will not risk it. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.
