Ocean Swimming

Had an interesting discussion at work last night... anyone else here refuse to enter the ocean now that you have a SWF tank? Let me explain.... I had NO idea all the worms, pods, creepy-crawlies that were in the ocean until I got a tank! I can't imagine going into the ocean, spaghetti worms swirling around my feet, copepods attaching to my legs... EEEEEEW!

yea, all our worms, fleas, skin mites, ticks, lice, etc LOL
and no, it doesn't prevent me from wanting to swim in the ocean. all the crap in the water off CT prevents me from wanting to go swimming in the ocean.

abolutely NOT. It would be torture for me to go right up to the waters edge and not get in. I actually take my beach chair and sit IN the water, and if tide is out, I head to the sand bar.
In other words I am usually NEVER dry at the beach.

PLUS I generally share the water with a few manatee's passing by and some dolphin occaisionally spy on me

I stopped going in the ocean for one reason and one reason only, it is just plain too cold!!!
Then I had kids.......it had been at least 15 years since I had been in the ocean. Now during the summer it is a weekly occurrence.

I actually take my boat to remote locations where I can get out and wade fish. I don't swim in the ocean though as the activity scares fish and could attract a shark. Actually the only time I swim is when I'm lobstering.

I'm just the opposite I guess. I REFUSE to swim in a freshwater pond/lake. Especially down here with Gators and amoebas and stuff.

O yeah we are seeing an explosion in the gator population here in Arkansas I had never seen a gator in the wild till this year and I have seen 5 of them in a short time which is becomeing the norm now. I just never had my camera when I saw them go figure.

Gators in Arkansas??? Crazy. I would imagine that a good freeze will end that situation quickly.
BTW. I thought that was Razorback country.

O the razorbacks are around too but gators have always been in Arkansas just not that many of them i think the count years ago was less than 500 but they have been on the increase as a protected species. they are talking about bring a gator hunt back with the game and fish commission.

That I agree with, fresh water is sooo gross, it tastes like mud, you have a film of dirt on you when you get out. And there are things that will actually nibble you like gators, leeches and stuff.

Has anyone read about the brain eating amoebas in lake Havasu? I love swimming in the ocean, unless it's the Pacific which is to dark and cold...if I can't see what's around me I don't feel comfortable.

Weird to think I don't like the feeling of the ground in a lake or pond either. But I shuffle my feet in FL and have kicked a few sting rays and am not bothered by it.

The mud isn't so bad, i think it is kind of gross, but a fun gross. But I'd much rather shuffle my feet and mess with stingrays.

CRIKEY!!!
Why are they so prevelant now??? I am thinking they need to re-visit the "protected species" thing. Look where its getting Atlanta and their water problem.
Oh, and I can't stand lakes. Yuck. Especially the heavily boated kind.
They are pretty to look at, but thats it. Missouri has many heavily populated lakes and none are attractive to me.
That brain destroying ameboa would scare me to death. i am still trying to figure out what it is and where it came from.

as for the sting ray shuffle, I learned that almost before I learned to walk and the same for my kids. Its second nature for us in the oceans. They scoot right off when you head their way.
