You have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to get eaten by anything in the ocean. I was snorkeling in Cancun last week, and I came within four feet of a 4 foot barracuda. Wasn't interested in the least. I have a buddy whose in the Coast Guard, and during the major holidays they run their choppers up and down the Texas coast monitoring the beaches. He said if people knew how many sharks were withing 30 feet of them while they were bobbibg up and down in the waves, they'd never go in the water again.
My worse fear in the ocean is like loopy's. I'll take a Cuda or shark swimming in the perimeter any day over a Man O War floating nearby.

You have a million times higher chance dieing of a car accident getting to the beach than a shark eating you.
More people die by getting hit by lightning than getting eaten by a shark. lol Don't know why everyone makes such a HUGE deal out of it when they get attacked by a shark. Same goes with jellyfish, you have a MUCH higher chance of dieing of a jellyfish sting than getting eaten by a shark. Don't hear a hole lot about people getting killed by jellyfish tho.

I've been snorkeling as well, near shore, with a 4' barracuda just below swimmers splashing feet.

Got caught up in a swarm of jellyfish at the reef once. Got really stung, but fortunately nothing serious.
The only time I've really worried about it is when I've been cut on a rock, and bleed. Then of course, you could attack some problems.

About 13 years old or so, snorkeling off Palm Beach somewhere, I stood up and was fixing my mask above water (continued walking towards the rock pile though) and right when I dived under, and right there in front of me was at least a 7 foot nurse shark laying in the sand. I think walked on water out of there...
Hindsight, it was only a nurse, but the surprise got me. The worst diving incident was trying to come ashore during low tide. Rocks everywhere and it was quite choppy. I still have scars from being pummeled on the rocks.
But by far the scariest is when you're snorkeling, and you see something BIG
and black off in the distance swim by. All you can do is backup to some rocks and pray....

Even the summer of Jaws I never gave it a second thought. I was more worried about Jellyfish. Got tangled up in one of those dirty bass turds when I was like 12. Not fun.

'Cudda's are what I fear most. Sharks, okay, yes, I do have them in my mind, but my first time snorkeling I came face to "face" with a cuda and it was NOT, NOT, fun. Fortunately the people I was with told me hold my ground and not panic. I did not have anything "flashy" on, they were just courious. Jelly fish, COMPLETELY scare me. They hurt!!

I live about a mile from the ocean and since I've bought my house I think I've been to the beach 3-4 times. I love swimming in the ocean but I hate the "going to the beach part". Traffic, sand, annoying people.... No thanks!

I've dived around tons of barracudas and they haven't done anything but swim off. why ya'll scared of them? they don't attack unless they feel threatened ( which is usual for an animal), other than that they will just dart away.

Be honest.

That would be me...Jaws sacred the you know what out of me, then I go and watch animal planet. went on vacation to Florida... went to the beach once...swam maybe 10 minutes. I went home and got a pool.

When I dive I have no fear of anything that I may encounter... I feel that I am in total control. I have been face to face with an 8 ft. bull shark in 2 ft vis and didnt think twice about it. However, when I am at the beach in chest deep water I feel extremly vulnerable and dont like it one bit

you know that some people think bull sharks are territorial!!
I try to go surfing like 3-6 times a week and have surfed in very out of the way places it can be scary when your surfing a place thats not far form some where you know some one lost a head!!! but if your going to do something you do it because you like it and don't think about the bad stuff... and trust me there are worse things than getting bit by a shark.
I have been chased out of the water my a sea lion before and have surfing with mother wale and it's calf but most of the time your thinking about the waves or what ever your doing
