It is possible but you run the risk of putting pollutants in your tank that can get out of controlled in a controlled environment. Just something to consider.

If you can borrow a boat and collect the water a few miles out at sea there is less chance of pollution. Note however that the standard salt mixes actually have slightly higher trace element ammounts than standard sea water, for maciumum coral growth.

A friend of mine actually gets his water from the country's national aquarium and apparently it works well for him. Dude, the aquarium! Unreal.

I have gathered water from the atlantic and have had no problem I just make sure that I run the water through a pillow case. There is a LFS that does the same and sells it.I just make sure I am not getting the water right from the bank and go out a little ways so that it is a bit cleaner. If you have boat that would most likely be better.I dont do offen for I have a rodi and mix my own but when I want to save $$$$ I do it. It just take a while to gather.

If you don't mind paying for it, ***** has something called Real Ocean Water. The name of the company that makes it, well collects it, is Catalina Water Company. www.catalinawater.com Check em out. Its real ocean water from the Pacific. They collect it, and filter it. I have been using this from the beginning, which is not too long ago, but I have have had zero water issues. PH is perfect, gravity is perfect. salinity is perfect, ect.... and no mixing!!!! It cost 9.99 for 5 gallons, which can get expensive quick if you have a large tank. I have a smaller tank, so its perfect for me.
Good luck,
Tom
