Oceanic Biocube 29 or 32 Filter Problems

I bought a used oceanic Biocube... The first couple of days it did fine, then my skimmer started making noise, so I removed it, now my pump on one side is pumping air bubbles. I looked in the chamber (where it says min/max) and it is in between, so water level isn't too low, but the part that sucks up water use definitely sucking up air also. I cleaned the filter, and the only thing that seems to work is to remove a plastic piece that goes above the filter to direct the water... Not sure why that would matter. Anyone have any ideas? I would like to put the plastic piece back and be able to use my skimmer (which was in the middle chamber, but I think the water level was too low)... Thank you!
Thanks

The middle chamber has an "in tank" filtration basket. I don't have the skimmer in right now. I think it's the basket, when I remove the basket, it stops doing the air bubbles.

You're going to want to raise the water level at least to the max line. Try it and let me know what happens.
