Oceanic Protein Skimmer

My search feature isn't working... nor can I post pix... ANYWAYS... I just purchased the NANO Oceanic Protein skimmer, that fits in the Bio Cubes 14g and 29g. I was wondering if any one is familiar with this unit? If so is it worth the money? I know that they work on a minute scale, but having the JBJ 24g, I don't need a huge one! Also need help with it, I haven't ever had a protein skimmer before! It seems that it is filling up with water too fast. IT was halfway full with in an hour with water. What is the proper settings on a protein skimmer?

i would return it man. i really dont like skimmers. it collects alot of important bacteria your tank needs. IMO as long as you do proper water changes you are good. sorry for late replys

I dumped my skimmer and made a fuge way better, my water turned crystal clear when i took my skimmer out and put in my fuge and it doesn't smell like doodoo...lol
Like nissan said just do weekly water changes and your fine...

I was with out one forever and everyone always talks about them! I DO weekly 2g water changes on my tank as is. I really never got a real streight answer on what it would do for me as far as it was concerned either. All I really knew was people liked them. I have a fuge in center compartment w/ live rock and macro algea. I cleaned out the center compartment beginng of dec, and found that I prob have 4-5lbs of live rock back there..... lol didn't realize I had so much. But What is the protein skimmer good for?

A protein skimmer is good for removing waste and uneaten food, which is good but with weekly water changes I feel you don't need no protein skimmer to do this, just keep your nitrates down and your fine as with all your other water conditions...

And i love how my lfs tell people they absoluting need them for the tank or it will crash(basically along those words) just too get them to spend $100+ on a skimmer...My setup came with a skimmer and it's noisey I ain't gonna lie and smells sometimes and I did clean the cup out everyday! I like the sound of water not a noisey pump in my back chamber...lol
If you can...find a quiet skimmer and you have the money then go for it...
I also think skimmers are a major plus for bigger aquariums, not smaller ones...

This one is very quiet... Cant hear it at all.... only 30 bucks... So cost and sound isnt a prob! What is the propper setting on them? Is it suppose to fill up with water quickly, the collection cup?

they take time to "break in", usually a week. You are supposed to change the airstone on a routine basis, so keep that in mind. As far as setup, go over the instructions and do exactly what they say.
I too thought water changes were enough until I got my PS on my fuge and saw what came out of the water, water changes may dilute but never get rid of all the waste.

haha more differing answers. I was thinking about adding one myself and would like to know some more thoughts on this as well. I plan on getting rid of the filter floss to expand my fuge and was thinking about using a PS to help remove some of the waste.

THX for the reply! As for the instructions, it leaves it a bit vauge. I am aware that they require a break in period, but why is this? It seems very odd that it takes time for it to develop! I am getting skim from it, but it is still really clear. IT has only been on the tank for a full day, and it seems so much clearer and cleaner. Like there isnt as much floating debris in the water. I believe it to have been a very good investment.... Now if I get it set up right......

Ur directions in your thread really helped me! Thanks. I currently have it in the intake chamber, so number one. I have my "fuge" in number 2 along with my heater, then on the JBJ it goes to the return pump. So I set it close the the specs you told me in your thread, and it built "skim" up till it went over the final inch or so into the collection cup, does that sound right with the settings?

Sounds right. You want the bubbles to be set at the very top of the reaction chamber (the small circle at the top of the unit) with the collection cup off of the unit. Then put the collection cup back on and the bubbles will eventually build up to the point they go over the inside portion of the cup, break and flow down to the bottom of the cup. If that is happening you are good to go.

You know, I had a Sapphire Aquatics, still do actually. They fit in the second chamber and take up the entire chamber. I wanted to do some macro algae and Chemipure there so I took it out and used chamber 2 for the algae. Still wanted a skimmer, did not want to have a HOB so I bought the Oceanic. Not the rolls royce or even the Subaru (
) of the skimmer world but does a decent enough job for me to keep it going. Rotary posted a mod for it that extends the reaction chamber to give the water more contact time with the bubbles. I may give it a try.

anybody use one of these in an aquapod? there's not much room in the back, so it would have to go in the display area (yeeesh). I think paintballer had one...cant remember..

This unit is able to be placed in the oceanic 14 g, so it is pretty small n compact.
