Octopus bh-90 vs bh-1000

Shawn not trying to be argumentative but wouldn't raising the water level in the chamber allow the skimmer to produce foam over into the collection cup. Not saying put a 300gal rated skimmer on a 55, but if you had a 75 rated skimmer on a 55 with a low bio load.

agree 100% all comes down to how much bioload. thats why planning the tank before you start is important. fowlr needs more skimming since the fish are usually big poopers.

when i did run skimmers and raised the water level i found out the skimmer will piss water to the overflw(waste container)not just foam. then you have to get into fine tuning

No.... a skimmer that is oversized regardless of how you adjust the water height in the skimmer body will not overall affect the skimmer performance or consistency. What would honestly happen as it commonly does is when oversized you keep raising the water level upward to get the foam to overflow into the collection cup
Then after a bit it stops skimm I ng so you go back and raise a bit more till it goes nuts and oberflows. I keep using Seth as an example and if you read hos thread or comments you will see what I'm saying. Better yet over on RC in the RO skimmer section you will see the importance of sizing a skimmer. Even with a FOWLR or whatever. Biggerr isnt always better. You wouldnt put a xp5000 skimmer on a 150 gallon tank regardless what you were keeping.

Its ok I was learning from this. I think I will be ok with the bh-90. I just installed it and it is overflowing like crazy. Its just white foam. I havent added anything to the tank. I guess its just part of the brake in. Right now I have a overflow hose on it and going into a gallon jug, but would it be ok to just have it return to the tank as it has no live stock and is in the middle of cycling ammonia 2ppm nitrites 1-2ppm and nitrates still zero

Do not run skimmer during cycle you want the ammonia to go high, this will provide food source for the bacteria so they can multiply.

I turned it off, I heard some people say since it has to brake in it doesnt matter if you run it during cycle. Also read somewhere I just just run the skimmer drain line back into the tank. should I add another shrimp to the tank? the one that was in there has been gone for a few days.

What are you readings? How many days are you into the cycling of your tank? If the shrimp is gone, may take a while B4 the ammonia goes to 0. Adding more food source depends on you ammonia reading. The goal is to keep the ammonia bacteria alive while the nitrite bacteria multiples. Normally you leave the shrimp in for a couple of days or when your ammonia hits 1 then you pull it out and ghost feed tank as if there is 1 fish in there. You may be a little higher with ammonia if the shrimp complete dissolved.

The tank as been up and running since the last week of june. I added 55lbs dry keylargo rock, 5lbs of live rock covered in purple algae, about 4 inch sand bed on july 3. I just got the test kit on july 12 and test showed ammonia 0-0.25, nitrite 0, and nitrates 0. I added a shrimp 14th sunday. I tested the next morning monday and ammonia was around 0.50-1.0 nitrite 0-0.25 nitrate 0. I just tested just now and ammonia 1.0-2.0 nitrite 1.0-2.0 nitrate 0-0.25
