You can't do any of those, unless you add some crabs/snails/hermits for food.
Reason no corals is because corals need strong lighting, and octo's like dim.

corals and starfish are fine.
the only thing with corals is ther eis a chance the octo might grab it and move it for its den then the coral will end up dying..You can have any light you want just as long as the octo has alot of darker places to hide in

I'd like to hear Texas Metal's input about lighting for octo's.

Why...I have had 5 octos in my time. they just need a place to hide. Most of the octos we get come from small tide pool areas and such and thats ALOT of light during the day and they have their little areas to hide.

Yes I know about octo's and they do need a place to hide. But most corals need some lights such as PC's or MH's, and unless you do sun corals, I just can't picture an octo under MH's. Maybe T-5's which seem to be softer.

Ive kept starfish and pencil urchins. I wouldnt put any corals that have strong stings, arnt attached to a large peice of rock, or have branches that can be broken...I had an octopus that decided to rip EVERY shred of caulerpa off the live rocks one day. What a mess, and I could see it doing the same to branching or unattached corals.

actually I think a halide would be better then T5..T5 would light MORE of the tank up unlike a halide would give alot more shaded areas and such.

Yeah, and I still support the T-5 over MH's.
But, if you want a reef, set up a nano reef. If you want an octopus then make it a species only. My 2 cents.

Octos will eat anything they can over power and they can break shell's open so the shrimp and crabs are out. Unless its a big crab (like one of the strawberry hermits) then when and if your octo goes for you stand a chance of the octo turning into crab food. I would stick to species only and low light corals (shrooms, polyps, some zoas, some types of branching corals such as kenya trees, finger leathers placed high in the tank. That kinda stuff.

ok what does adding crabs snails and hermits for food have to do with keeping corals with octos?
Lighting is not the issue because if you go to the beach and look up in the sky you will see a huge ball of burning gasses . Thats called a sun and it lights up the ocean where octos live . The reason most say they arent reef safe is they like to move things around and willinadvertantly harm the corals.

Finally someone who looks at it logically. the Sun is SOOO much brighter then anything we can put over the tank. MANY of the octos live in shallow tidal pools and they hide in their dim caves. You can have any type of light you want on the tank. Just give it caves and such to be in
