update on my bimac progress:
Yesterday I purchased an eclipse-type 30gal acrylic tank. I like the idea of the eclipse hood but I found one that actually had a wood looking finish instead of the eclipse black (matches my other tank :D ) I bought it used and i noticed that a couple parts are missing from the top filter, so im going to gut it out and use the precut holes and cut my own holes in the back of the filter and use them to slide the two hoses of a fluval canister filter!! It should work good and hopefully provide a little better filtration than just the original power filter. Im setting it up this weekend and counting down the days till its cycled and ready!!!! Ill try to post some pics when I set it all up!!!

i made 10 video clips of him in action, they can be found in the photo section here:
https://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/showthread.php?t=166412
and a small update:
The octopus is still doing good, hes almost doubled in size since i got him a little over a month ago. I added a second brittle star and a chocolate chip starfish to the tank, everything seems to be getting along. He has decided he likes to rip my caulerpa off and throw it around, so i dont think any sessile inverts are safe either. My tank is also filling up with pods by the millions but also has a slight red slime and green hair problem.
readings: pH 8.0 / ammonia 0 / nitrite 0 / nitrate <10 / SG 1.025ish / temp 78C

jon the red slime is probably cyano bacteria which is usually pretty easy to get rid of. is there anything you can do to reduce the pods? what about a small 'reverse refuge' where you kept a mandarin that eats the pods that get swept in there through current? haha just a thought.
do you guys vaccuum your substrates?

its only a 20g tank, so i do 3 water changes a week, 1 with vacuming and i still use less salt than my 77g :)....yes, im confident that the red slime will dissappear on its own in time
but ive also been noticing that the entire surface of any rock not in direct light is coved in hundreds of sponges or sea squirts or whatever they are, white, clear, and bronze/gold colored ones abound, they seem to each have 2 'funnels' per colony and are small, but not as small as the usual sponge colonies, mabey there is too much debris in the water column? im contemplating on what to do with them, i dont want a massive die-off in such a small tank, but i dont know how to remove them...maby the chocolate chip star will help :)
and about the pods, i cannot make a fuge very easily as i need the tank 100%, and i mean 100% tight so the octopus wont escape, but i dont think they are doing any harm....although it looks gross because they like to swarm all over the front glass, go figure, just my luck

what if you put a small rust free screen on the out tube, and a tighter mesh for the one back in, so they will tend to get pulled in but not really pushed back?

that is possible....hmm....i dont think i have enough pods for a mandarin yet, but within the next couple of months my rocks and sand will just be a mat of pods lol...thats when ill get a mandarin LOL...i wonder if an octopus would leave it alone because they are poisonous? hmmm
and also, is it even possible to maintain a mandarin in a 20g tank? although i do have 25lbs mature live rock (over 6 years old), 20lbs live sand, and more macro than you can shake a stick at!

Nope, already tried that. I bought a mandarin for my octo tank but within an hour of it being released she killed it and then must have realized it was poisinous becuz she didn't eat it.

Doesn't have to be a pic of him inking, just the actual ink, wanna see what it would look like in a tank :jumping:

oh, it doesnt look like ink really, and its not cloudy, its more of a large gob of mucus, the prefilter catches it and i siphon it out but ill try and get a pic next time.
