I have the lid sealed up with duct tape (a great multi-use product and not THAT unattractive:))...
Have had him only since this afternoon. He's a bimac, we think. At least that's what I told the LFS to order....
He hasn't eaten yet, but I threw in some chromis and a couple of turbos for him when he gets hungry.

Thanks:)
I hope he starts eating, too. I should probably throw some shrimp in for him...might be easier to catch than the chromis...eventually I'm hoping he eats off a feeding stick.
He hasn't done too much flashing...he's been curious enough to leave his den a couple of times to check things out.

:(
I was waiting for one of these.
Sandman:
He's in a 55 long w/about 20lbs LR.
My book on octos says you can start them out in a 20g...most are so tiny when you get them...
A marine-biologist friend who kept octos in FLA says most do well in home aquariums...just make sure to know whether you have a cooler water species....

Everything I read says no...eventually your fish will become lunch.
Mine is very small, and would be lost in a 125 until it gets considerably larger....which is why it's in a 55. However, if it inks (which is toxic), it's much better in a 125!
I threw some chromis and snails in for it when it gets hungry...so far it hasn't eaten them.

Hey, I have had several friends with octos and they have all started feeding with things like snails and crabs. There is a dwarf octo at my LFS and it just devowers(sp?) any kind of crab they put with him. They work great as start up food because they move and initiate a feeding response, but they are slow enough for even the slowest octo to catch. If you buy the freshwater crabs to start out with they are also very cheap. Crabs are also the natural food of most of the smaller octos also. I hope that this will help you out and get the cool looking guy to eat. Oh, and the people I know that have had them were able to keep them for at least 2 years. One kept theirs for 4 years (which is more than the average time of 3-4 years for dwarf octos).

Waterdog:
Good idea, I threw in some blue legs from my reef...
Sandman:
Here's a new pic of him...he's camoflauged, so he's kind of hard to see....
BTW, the little sh** inked up his tank already after I tried to rearrange his LR cave....lots of fun to do a water change so soon!
One interesting thing about him already...he seems to like my dog...he comes out to the glass when the dog stands by the tank...maybe I'm reading too much into it!

listen to this: What can weigh 100 pounds, be 10-12 feet in length and still squeeze
through a 3 inch hole? The answer: the giant Pacific
octopus
and urs is way smaller ,if i were try to have no holes at the top, or else!!!!

I did about a 50% change, just to be safe.
THe ink is toxic to them...My reference says a 20% water change, but I don't want to lose him, so I changed half.
I'll get a pic of him eating if I can...I am hoping I DON'T catch him inking again--because that just means I'm freaking him out!
Grouper,
I think he's a bimac, too. But I'm no octo expert, either. He ate late yesterday! Waterdog's suggestion of crabs was a good one!
