I have started building this latest tank and now was just comparing the same skimmers.
Just my opinion ,but this is my take on those two skimmers......
The octopus line just seemed cheap to me when I was really looking at them. For the price point they just dont seem to be impressive. They function and require little tinkering but I cant really get past how cheap they feel when inspecting them.
The G4 is a large skimmer for a 225g tank. The G4 does seem to have a good reputation with folks. From looking at the unit in action on a few tanks it seems to make up for lower efficiency with its consistency and operation. No one seems to complain about them but with such size I personally want more results. I assume your built your own stand and have the room underneath for the larger units so I vote for the ASM.

I have a oct dual recirculating and love it. Never has a ASM so I can't help on that end. Don't think you can go wrong w/ either.

Have you looked at Euro-Reef RS180 ? It's built better than ASM.
euroreef is better(material etc) than asm indeed...but it might get harder to get support from them soon..theyve started taking on more themselves and taken it away from online store's stock...from everything i hear it seems like it might be a bit more trouble
between asm and octopus---octopus is making improvements to their original skimmers with the extreme model...which from what i've heard is very nice..but they are now coming out with another model...haven't heard anything about it though....their extreme models are beginning to mimic the bubble king with a bubble plate,etc...not sure about the new ones coming..just my thoughts

I have 2 ASM skimmers running now, a mini, and a G3. I considered buying an octo, but could not get past the cheap no name pump on them. Then octo came out with their extreme line with sicce pump, but people were having problems with them. I ended up going with another ASM. It is quiet and reliable, and with a couple of mods they skim great.

I hate to throw any confusion into the mix, but I think that Precision Marine skimmers are HIGHLY underated. I think their performance is great and very moderately priced (compared to some). I have never had a single issue with their customer service either, the one time that I had to use it. The things are just extremely well constructed on top of all that.

I have an ASM G3 with a sedra 7000 pump and was always happy
when I expanded to about 180-200 gallons I looked at the octipus and the G4and stuck with a favorite for me and the G4 with the sedra 9000 is awsom you shoul see the junk it pulls out of my tank
good luck with deciding
also the ASM's are built very well
if you want to know where to get a real good deal on one im me

I have a Octopus 150RC on my 160gal system, and it does a very good job. When I have to get a new skimmer for my new tank it will be a custom skimmer that I am building. If I were to buy another one, it would be an Octo. My skimmer build will be based on an Octo.

I have been running ASMs (3, 4 and 4x) in different applications for about 2 years now and have nothing but praise for them. No problems, run pretty well right out of the box. I have made no modifications to them as they appear to run well. I have heard of people making them recirculating and usuing a 'mesh' to modify the intake wheel, but not about making them out of sump.
I have not used an Octopus, but have heard good things about them.
