At first I used to think my Purple tang was trying to spike me but then I started petting it over the past few weeks.. now as soon as I put my hand in the tank it comes and rubs on me like its a cat or something.

I've had fish that did. Mostly 6-8 inch goldfish...I am currently training my seahorse Valiant to take hand fed treats. He is still somewhat shy, but over time he is becoming more accustom to my hand and doesn't mind a small rub down the side on his tail.

It is entirely possible it considers it like a cleaning station (as with cleaner shrimp or wrasse). However, I would agree that it may not be the best bet for the fish, personally.

Coral Beauty loves it.Oh and one of the Hermit Crabs likes to crawl on my hand to look for morsels of food.Just be gentle or you wreck the coating.

I wouldn't "pet" the fish because you could damage his slime coat. There is nothing wrong with placing your hand in for him to rub on if he wants, preferably the back of your hand which would be smoother than the palm. Watch out for the spike though!!

My cleaner shrimp likes to give manicures.
You have to ask yourself, why are you petting your fish? Maybe you need a cat or dog. I wouldn't recommend putting your hand in the tank unless necessary. I worry about detergents, soaps, sweat, or chemicals on my hands everytime I put my hands in the tank, and I limit the times I do.

Scoobs I see your excitement has fallen on deaf ears...
I think it's cool that your fish does this. I'd say if it were irritating him the fish would quit volunteering.
A buddy of mine has a fish that will pop it's head out of the water and look at you... not the same but still cool.

i have seen a lot of dog faced puffers do this...
They will actually roll over when you put your hand in the tank(almost submitting to you) and over time you realize that they want you to rub there bellies.. (which doesn't really feel like anything, the skin feels as thin as tissue)
I had an all black dog face that i just lost do to ick..(a really expensive one too
) When he was in QT (under hypo) i walked into the room and seen him puffed up.. The first 2 times i seen it, he stayed puffed up for 15 mins or more.. By the 3rd time i stuck my hand in the tank and rubbed his belly(figured it wouldn't hurt anything anyways) he deflated immediately..
With that being said i would almost say it actually relaxes the puffers..
I probably wouldn't be so excited to rub a porky tho..
