how old is the tank?
what algae do you have growing in it?
are you missing any snails?
how often do you do water changes, do you have a skimmer?
does your water level go down any in your tank?

A heathly tank shouldn't smell except right after feeding time.
It would help if you could somehow describe the smell somehow. Does it have a sulfer odor? Rotten eggs?
Do you have a protein skimmer on the system?

Carbon helps eliminate odors, but you need to find the source of the smell.
I know that my fuge stinks when the algae gets overgrown. A dead snail can stink up a tank real quick.
Good luck.

Yes i have a skimmer, I have a little hair algea in it, and it is possible a snail died that I don't know about. I have nassarius snails and I can't always see them. If it is caused by a snail will the smell go away?

Im far from experienced in this field, but i know that when i first got my liverock worms and all sorts of strange things come out of hiding after 2-3 days and my water got really murky and the water began to stink so bad that i almost threwup everytime i walked into my room... it was shocking... I did a complete water change and got rid of all the worms etc - not sure this was the best idea but it did get rid of that smell... I asked a friend what happened and he said the Liverock wasnt cured but he could be wrong...

You happen to leave a cup of frozen fish food out to thaw and forget about it? That will cause one vile smell...
