I want to go diving and ive been working on getting my wife to go but she's affraid of sharks, she thinks if she goes shell get bit and i cant get her to understand that theres not much difference than swimming and diving in relation to danger. Any ideas of ways to convince her, would really hate to go with out her.

umm? do they offer a safety course or something? I'm always more inclinded to let sinner do something if he takes a safty course (ex. i was worried about him going paintballing...he watched a video on the safety and I was happy with that.)
hey, show her pic's of what she'll be able to see. I'd love to dive and see that stuff, so what if a shark bites me? as long as I get to see some stuff.
Maybe show her the statius (sp) (numbers) on how many people get hurt by shark from diving, vs. swimming or boating?
if nothing else, agree to do something she wants to do (watch a drama or something you don't like to do). or look cute and beg.
good luck, let me if she gives in.

Well I was more affraid of doing something wrong and getting the bends or drowning. I just started my PADI basic a few weeks ago. I have to do it for work. We are now doing some advanced classes in photography, bouyancy, and navigation. Anyway, I live in Pensacola.... Yea it seems like it was shark attack city last year. I'll be diving about 1/2 a mile from where that kid got attacked for my night dive by the peer. I was talking with a gentleman last weekend who goes fishing a lot and says he has seen lots of sharks by the peer. Ahhhh, Kind of dont know about that . I think that dive is next Wednesday so if you don't see me on here after then ya know what happened. Tomorrow i'm going to Cypress springs for a dive :)

I wish i was diving somewhere else. Not much here in Pensacola.
My girlfriend is going to Indonesia this summer for 5 weeks for a class. She is a marine bio major and they will basically be scuba diving every day or something like that. That class would suck

Oh by the way my job diving is not so glamorus. We have to monitor the oyster reefs we are building. that could be fun but we have to use a hooka and not scuba tanks. I've been told that you get a great taste of gasoline from them.

How about this -I'll go with you and she can come here and shop at the Mall of America--I've never been diving (not much opportunity in Minnesota unless your into carp :D :D
It's too bad she won't go -she'll be missing a great time I'm sure.
Have Fun

i've logged over 600 dives. i do ALOT of

[hr]
fishing and lobstering. I generally hunt for the bigger fish so if anything will attract them my actvivites most def will. I have only seen sharks on about 40 of my dives. most of these were nurses which are completely harmless. on 6 of those dives i have come into contact with agressive species, but this was only when i was spearfishing and a shot a larger fish that struggled alot and induced a great amount of blood into the water. One of my friends has 500 some odd logged dives and has only ever seen 2 sharks. he does not spearfish or lobster, so there is a connection.
honestly though i love to see the sharks when i dive, sure i've almost been munched twice but they are still beautiful creatures. My father and i rate diving as the best thing that i have ever done, well besides breathing.
so tell your wife that her chances of being munched by a shark are alot less than her dying in a plane crash. her chances of seeing a shark are almost as small, and that most of your more advanced divers consider it to be a rare treat to see some of these wonderful creatures. hope this helps.
oh and if you want to stats you can find them online. they are posted all over the place.
good luck.

i have had 1 experience with sharks, but it was simple solution.. off the coast of coronado, cali i was about 90 ft down when all the sudden it got dark.. looked up and a school of about 300 hammerheads was swimming overhead, well needless to say i was almost out of air so it was either stay down and drown of swim up threw the hammerheads, well i'm here now and would you believe the hammerheads parted the way for me and never gave me a second look.. just lucky i guess, or they weren't hungry

You didn't say if you were already certified or not? Is your wife comfortable in the water ?
The main thing here is not to force someone to learn to dive if they really don't want to, it could be very dangerous. If someone is comfortable in the water they can overcome problems that may arise without panicing. As far as the fear of sharks, that is somewhat commom for people that don't spend much time around or in the ocean, about the only way you might get her to change her mind is by going somewhere nice to snorkle, so she could see the beauty of the underwater world and see that nothing is going to bother her.
I've been diving all over the world and have never seen any overly aggressive fish, including sharks, and I've seen alot of them too.
The only time anything underwater is going to bother anyone is if you bother it first.
The only exceptions are usually spearfishermen and outfits that actually bait the sharks. Sometimes the sharks will get worked up during a feeding.
Anymore, most divers pay big bucks just to get to see sharks, as they are being killed off by the millions every year for their fins.
You might take a vacation to Grand Cayman and let her dive with the Stingrays. ? But back to the top, if she isn't comfortable don't force her. If you want to dive, then I'm sure she wouldn't sitting on the beach while your diving.
Good luck :D

well i can't wait until next week when i'll be doing my first ocean dive. The springs down here are crystal clear but very boring.
Here is an idea, try to at least get her certified and get some dives logged in a spring or something like that. If she likes it maybe she would be willing to try to move to the next level. Just an idea.
