What time did you test it? what time do your lights come on? Do you have a skimmer or anything to add oxygen or co2?

ph changes can come from a change in oxygen, did you cover your tank and now the ph went down? try testing again, that is a big change

@ all...
I have a protein skimmer (turned it off for water change, TODAY), tested this morning, and the pH went WAYYYY down to... 7.8 :( Oh... and might I also mention that I had hair algae and its disapearing like crap from turbo snails... and I cleaned out all the pumps and pointed the powerheads UPwards, so the suface has flow.

Ph will fluctuate. Mine is around 7.8-7.9 first thing in am, before lights are on. Later in the day its near 8.3. 7.8 is low, but not to panic. Check the ph once the lights have been on for a good 4hrs.

Maybe I am way off base here but if you have been having issues with hair algae and now the PH is fluctuating. I am wondering if you have started using different water recently? Or possibly a different salt mix?

No new water or salt mixes, the hair algae had been there for a long time, it stopped growing and now my turbo snails are chomping it good :D
