I would really like to own a salt water fish tank.....Problem I am overwhelmed with all the information. In fact I really don't know where to begin. It is so overwhelming that I am thinking of not doing it because I really know if I can do it. Please help!!!!

:) Welcome to the board and next take a DEEP BREATH!
Yes there is a lot of information to absorb but take it slowly. In this hobby nothing happens fast. Your best bet is asking any questions that may come to mind about how to start and read up on some of the stickies in this category *new hobbyists*

I recommend for starters to read "The New Marine Aquarium" by Michael S. Paletta just to gain some knowledge on SWF and how to create a basic setup. From there you will gain more experience especially if you stay this message board.

honestly i did a year and a half research before i started my tank, grant it i jumped in face first and smashed my face the first time around. i failed cause i did not research and understand everything. i strongly incourage u to try the hobby, with the knowing of the positive outcome it can bring. the joy of this hobby can be greatly magnifined. a thought to the wise, never go cheap at first with equipment cause u will only pay twice as much down the road. read, plan, read, plan....ask as many questions as possible, look at pics, and just enjoy..
oh welcome to the addiction............

I was the exact same way, but I did my research and started slow. Knowing ahead of time that you need a lot of patience is very helpful.
I did A LOT of research on this site, everyone has been extremly helpful on this board. I find myself out here almost every day. I also have a GREAT local fish store.
I decided, since this was my first adventure, to start simple. No reef tank, no coral so I did a fish only with live rock and live sand. I have a 45 gallon tank with a simple 70 gallon 3 stage filter. I've had it going for over a month now and I have 2 cleaner shrimp, 2 clowns, an urchin, 3 snails and 8 crabs. I must say it's very rewarding! My family loves watching all the activity in the tank.
Good luck and keep asking questions!

Read as much as you can on here.
Start very slow, and do not make decisions or buy anything solely on the opinoin or advice of one person.
Research any fish that you get, because later you may want to get a reef tank, or add more fish, and do not want to have to get rid of fish in order to advance your tank........
Also, i would recommend cycling your tank with dead cocktail( fresh market) shrimp, not damsels no matter what the local fish store tells you. It is unfair to the fish, and they will certainly become a hassle in the long run.

Ask as many questions as possible, you are starting off a whole lot smarter than i did by starting to ask questions here before buying anything.

Welcome to SWF.
You will love this site.

First, what is it you have in mind of having(when you think of the tank you want what do you picture) This would be a good place to start to get the right info on how to make that tank before you buy anything. Also I'm posting some threads for you to read through. These will put you way ahead of where a lot of us started.

welcome to the site. soon you will start itching & twitching if you are away from it for any amount of time. it really is a lot of information to absorb all at once but over time you will learn lots. after reading 500 posts on cyanobacteria you know what it is and how to get rid of it. its like that for everything in this hobby, it just takes time. when setting your tank up the most important thing is to be patient and RESEARCH! this board has soooo many great people... and they arent trying to sell you anything. LFS will tell you anything to make a buck, ask here first.
. most importantly, have fun!

Thank you each for your replies. I will take each peice of advice to heart. I plan on doing research for at least 2 years to make sure that my fish don't die. Right now I have a healthy betta and plan to expand.

+1 on this BIG time. This book is more or less current with existing hobby trends and technologies, and it gives a superb basis for skills. Then you just come here to sharpen it all
