Now, How can I help out with the heat it makes? Like were can I drill holes for better heat exhaust? And can I take the clear thing off? and hang it about 4 or 5 inches away from the water? Thanks! John

I've fiddled around with a few and this is just my opinion:
Take the whole thing apart and drill holes in the back so the heat escapes. This seems to double the life of the ballast.
Leave the plastic cover on. The humidity from the water will quickly kill the electronics.
I think it's a good amount of light for the price.
