Coraline algae will grow when your tank is established and with good lighting conditions. You can also buy supplement to encourage growth.

Never add anything that you cant test for...It will happen over time...I had one tank that just wouldnt grow Coralline algae...I have to scrape the glass on my 92 everyother day now...

I would recommend to research the supplements, obviously. I have some purple up around here somewhere, but have never used it. Contains calcium that I know of. You can test for that. okay, I found it. Says it contains ionic calcium and 10 micron aragoninte. Says it also replenishes iodine. But, it's up to the individual if they want to wait and be patient or use supplements.

Honest question...what color does the coraline start to form as... does it happen to start like a darker color and then change colors as it gets older or anything?
Also, how come all the pictures of tanks I see only has it cleaned off the front and side panels but it is left on the back?

There are tons of different colors of coraline out there, the purple just takes over and is the most aggressive. The reason don't scrape it off the back is because of two reasons:
1. Accessabilty, hard to get to
2. They like the look. Plus good snail food.

Coraline starts the same color usually dark purple, It starts as a little patch and then it takes over the whole rock.Sometimes It might change to a shadyer purple color if its under intense light..
Also there is other colors such as pink, orange and green coraline..this type will grow under mature stable tanks.Or in different strains of liverock..
People leave on back for many reasons: they like how it looks in the back ,sort of a background..Or its hard to get..

C Balance, Purple Up, Kent's A/B formula, or kalkwasser will all cause good coralline growth if you also have decent lighting. you need to test for calcium and alkalinity.

All you need for coraline: TIME,lights, good flow through out the tank, keeping Alkalinity, calcium, and Magnesium in check, plus TIME...

I personally think waiting is best. That's why we never used the Purple Up. It was free at the frag conference last year. That's the only reason we have it. However, with my 29 gal. tank that crashed, I was thinking of trying it out a couple of times, but haven't had the guts to try it. So there the bottle sits.

haven't had the "guts" to try? Purple Up is an additive that helps with calcium levels. there is virtually no risk with it. kalkwasser, yes you have to be careful with.

I have read that iodine can also be over dosed and be dangerous to a system. Purple up adds iodine, should I be worried about iodine levels? Does purple up add a large amount of iodine?

yes, iodine can be overdosed. not sure about iodine in PU. I used one bottle of Purple Up and then went back to C Balance (which I like better). as long as you follow the directions on the bottle of these things and test every couple weeks for calcium and alk, you shouldn't have any problems.
I also had good luck with kalkwasser but I quit and went to C Balance because kalk is too labor intensive setting up a drip every night. the real good thing about it though was that the alk stayed at a high level and didn't fluctuate any.

My calcium levels are fine. I forget the number cuz the hubby does my tests. I am usually too busy with kids, work, etc... I haven't ried because I am having so many problems with the tank (check out thread in reef forum) and I am taking things one step at a time. As it stands, we were gazing at the tank last night and saw there is coralline algae growth there, just not all over the tank.

Coral vital works well, and at triple dose x 7 days can help prevent ich in newly introduced fish (like a tang that seems suseptable to getting it in a new tank)

I find that purple up gives the coraline a "fake" look. to me it looks almost like someone painted it on. just my two cents. personally i like waiting.
Does anyone know where i could get a rock with orange coraline? I have a bit of green but i want more colors besides purple.
