How long have you had it?
How big is the tank?
What are the water parameters?
What else is in the tank?

If it did just show up overnight as you said, then I would say it was the heater. But, I would think that a healthy, active tang would realize if it was getting burned. Possible, but doubtful. What are your water perameters? Something is irritating him.

Just a thought, if it is hiding by the heater all the time you might have other fish harassing it and that is the only place it can go. If the heater is on then it would get burned. There are heate protectors you can buy that slip over the heater to prevent fish from getting burned and breaking of heaters. Might want to try this. Also find out if the fish is be harassed by any of the others too.

I don't think a burn (heater) is unreasonable, but unusual. Fish are cold-blooded, so the old line "toss a frog into hot water and he'll jump out. But put him into room temp water and gradually heat it, he'll sit there and cook himself," applies here. Heater was probably water temp when the tang wedged himself in, then warmed up when the tank needed heated.

thanks for your help everyone but she passed away last night...I'll miss my blue tang
im very sorry to hear..unfortunately I have seen this before in very small young tangs I was never able to pinpoint exactley what it is either.. im my experience with it as well it was a very fast acting illness with almost certain death....its hard to treat what we cant diagnose it very fast
