Spam bots were horrible. They ended most of it when they implemented the new security screen when you start up an account. Thankfully

I think one of the reasons this forum isn't growing is because the rule against links. It's enough to even make me want to find a new home forum sometimes.

I agree but it is a fish store first with the added benefit of having questions answered.
I left or actually got banned in maybe 2006 when the admin war happened with the mods about all the porn spambots. I left sw after that and was tankless until this year.
I live in Michigan now and they have an awesome forum which is great cause we get to meet local reefers and do frag swaps, trading and selling forums etc. i bounce my questions on here and there and get good results.

The site was constantly bombarded with spam and a lot of that spam was porn. At that time there was a large amount of members that were children. I for one was fed up with it and got into it with admin over the security of the forum.
Bottom line now is,that there are very few members but its a cleaner site. Not spam free, but better.

Now allowing porn links is one thing, but not allowing members to post links to knowledge aNd information is another. A lot of great up to date information is on other forums, including pictures of setups that we don't get to see on here. It would just be nice to be able to post references.

I don't understand how fewer members are better for a forum, to be honest. The rules of this forum don't attract adults who have big budgets to spend money on fish and coral. I feel like the business (Swf) could make a lot more money by attracting an older, adult crowd.

I guess that's just me.

The rule is no links to other competitive fish stores or advertisements of other stores/sites. Not sure why that very limited limitation is that much of a big deal. I just put a link in the Disease Forum to show hono808 an example of something. LOL. Anyhow, with the previous owners, they were extremely strict about links or even mentioning another competitive site and the site was very popular at that time. If you are talking about RC, that site is the largest forum on the net and always has been. It is also not a store; even so they took down their buying/selling/trading forum, their review of other stores forum, and they now have stricter policies on links then they used to. Posting links to RC is unnecessary since we all can go over and visit that site if we want to....everybody in the hobby knows of its existence. We used to be between #2 and 3. Not sure where or what is out there with forums at this point other than RC.

I think the recession happened and people left the hobby in droves. I also think that internet forums have evolved and you don't see the level of social activity on a lot of them that we used to get in the early 2000's. People just don't live their lives on forums anymore as they did when internet social media was new. (Much better now to post pics of your daily meals and take selfies for FB--LOL!) The hobby was a boom during that time as well because the internet opened up and what was once fearful to step in to, because completely possible with the help of the internet and internet stores such as this one. Also, this site took a big hit with all of the glitches in the forum under Huddler. There are still some glitches which is a turn off such as blurry avatars and difficulty for old members to re-sign in to this new forum. Every time the forum changes to a new format, it looses something in the process.

Ya know thinking back Beth, I started in the late '70s and it took so much effort to get any information. With FAMA being a good source for instance.
But now with internet, boards like this one and even just plain old google, information is so much easier to obtain.

But I guess ya gotta be a really old guy (f***) LOL to understand that let alone feel it.

I was on here and left during the recession. Just couldn't afford tank stuff. When I just came back tried to log into my old account and the site had no record of it.

I guess I fall in to that category. I remember when the only source of info was hobby magazines, books, and the local pet shop (yikes!) (I started the hobby around '90). We ventured into this brave new world and conquered! LOL Nowadays, just open up google and search around....you've got a library as well as knowledgeable fellow hobbyists at your fingertips.
