A friend asked me to help him move over the 4th of July about 5 years back. He lived way out in the sticks and he had already shut off all the utilities at end of June. We got sidetracked with a camping trip so it was the weekend following that we went to move the remainder of his items.
He had already gotten hinself moved for the most part with clothing and most of the furniture ect into the new house so we werent in a rush.
He just totally spaced off the deep freezer he had out on his back sun porch that was stocked with a previous seasons hunting game.
The buzzing was like a helecopter from the swarming flies. Maggots everywhere and blood and all sorts of nastiness had come leaking out of the freezer. It had been sitting with no power and packed with meat for about 2 weeks in mid Summer heat.
Blood dried on the porch and soaked the floor even warping the porch in spots.
I gag just THINKING about that damn freezer. We joked about trying to make it look convincing to just burn the house down. Shovels of squirmy little things, flies that you could smell them fly past you. And the worst smell on the planet when we opened the actual freezer. The smell actually HIT you. you couldnt help it, you recoiled like getting punched.
We sealed it best we could, taped it shut and loaded the thing straight to the dump. Nice unit too but no WAY was I going to spend another minute playing with that thing.
*shudders*

I have smelled rotten fridges before and it is bad. However for bad smelling, can't get rid of the smell out of your nose horrible. Buy some empty hermit crabs shells from this site and clean them the recommended way, in boiling water. The steam carries the odor around and makes it impossible to get away from.
What we do for this hobby.....

Wont go into detail about how I know it but its similar to Reefs story, anyway here is the receipe for cleaning your fridge. Vicks under your nose, bandana across your face, rubber gloves and Tilex spray (it is the only thing that will take the smell out - make sure you spray the rubber!) Good luck!

OK I must be really tired, because I just spent 3 minutes wondering how bad charcoal and baking soda could smell.
