I have a new w/d filter system, LFS advises to change 8 1/2 X 11 filter monthly. However have read that they should be changed on a weekly basis. If you have a W/D Filter system please advise your thoughts on this matter. :needhelp:

Thanks Stachy :D
Please forgive my ignorance but I am new to this and tank just cycled. Do you do small weekly water changes and then use that water to clean the filter ? Or just use RO water? I am trying to figure out the best maintenance for my aquarium. Not sure if I should believe everything the LFS tells me. :notsure:

I do a 25 - 30 % water change once a month.
Then I rinse all my fiter pads in the dirty water.
When I'm not doinga water change I just use tap water, I know someone will not to do it but I wring out the filter pad very well.
I mix my salt water ahead of time ( with RO water ) in a 30 gal bucket/ garbage can form HD, put a lid on it and some times I will put My heater in it, sometimes the water is a bit chilly. Usually I alloy it to come to room temp for 24 hrs. Then I add it to the tank. You might want to get a small pump to transfer the new water to the tank.

I clean my prefilter weekly, pad every 2 weeks, and flush the balls with saltwater once a month.
I get my pads from the famous auction site.
You can get rolls of filter padding cheap.

Thanks for the info! I am very excited about my new aquarium and just want to make certain I am on the right track. Unfortunately I changed the pad before asking the question so hopefully I will be OK . Probably smaller water changes more often will be easier for me to handle . Thanks again for your input, will let you know how it is going!
:joy:

I use 50 and 100 micron pads. I bought a big sheet and cut them to fit my overflow and my drop plate.
I have them length and width enough so I can rotate the over flow (get 1-week out of one) and the drip plate is about every 5 days...Water is very clean.

Changing pads is fine.
I like smaller water changes. Much safer if the water is off a little. And easier on the fish.
I use some polyster stuffing for fine particles. Its pretty cheap also.

I agree. I was doing a 25% water change per month then switched to 10% each week, easier, faster and so far so good.
