Way to small. They are messy eaters and it would be hard to keep up with parameters with him in there. Go bigger.

One gallon would need to be topped off so frequently, you would hate it. Theres also no mantis that can do well in a 1 gallon. Try a 5 gallon and research different mantis species, some may be able to do on in there.

I definitely agree that no mantis should be in a 1 gallon. We have a N. Wennerae in a 20 gal. long and he is only about 1 1/2 inches at the most. It's kind of overkill for one that small, he could definitely go in a 5 gallon, but nothing less, and he is one of the smaller species. Check out Roy's List of Stomatopods, he has a really informative list of species, and tons of specs on them.
As far as lighting, I wouldn't do more than PC's. They get stressed in high lighting like T-5 and MH and can develop shell disease because of it.

Actually, 5 gal. is good for smaller species that only get a couple of inches long such as the N. Wennerae and the G. Smithii according to Dr. Roy. It's when you start getting into the Peacocks and such that you would need a much larger tank

I say 10G only because most people like to cut whatever they're told in half, so I figure if I say 10G and he does 5G, he's not that bad off

I have my Mantis in a 12G for now, until he gets bigger. He and I are already planning his new tank. He demands numerous meals- er, dinner guests

Nothing should be kept in a 1 gallon except coral. Quoting another SWF member "Just because a great dane can be kept in a closet doesn't make it right".

Yeah, I know what you mean. We have our tiny 1 incher in a 20 gal. long
He is spoiled. And I know exactly what you mean about being demanding. Ours will only accept hand fed food, god forbid he must go down to the sand bad off of his balcony and work for it
