One month update of my 24 gallon

Why oh why do you post pictures of a Mandarin in a 24 gallon?
Even if you think you know more than the collective minds of this site, it's just stirring the pot.
It seems like a daily occurance for this site to advise well over 50 gallons for this fish.
That advice is given based on good facts and knowledge. Those fish really shouldn't be kept in such small quarter due to their preference for grazing on pods all day long?

as to the last post....sorry for wanting to show pics of my tank...i saw this guy in the pet store today in a tank that is probably no more than 5 gallons maybe and it was him and another mandarin and there was no sand and no live rock...so how is me taking him home and giving him a place to stay where he can pick at stuff on the rocks and at least have a chance at life than just dying at the pet store...you dont think i dont know that its hard to keep a fish like that in a small tank and its my tank so its my perogative if i wanna try to maintain a species that everyone says is hard to keep...there are always exceptions to the rules and you always hear stories of how these guys did very well in a smaller type of tank....so the next someone posts pictures suggest your ideas and not tell them what they can and cannot do...

I have listened to people on the post. My tank still sucks!
i have put uncooked shrimp and all kinds of crap in my tank
4 different pet stores, even the same store has told me different things
Who do you listen too.
One LFS, told me to quit listening to people online
My ammonia levels are redicoulus.
Yesterday I added 20 lbs of LS and a 5 gallon water change to my 24 gl nano cube
Lets hope this works!
I wish people in these forums would give accurate advise!

They make these great sources of information called books. The site common recommends Conscientious Marine Aquarist
Most the advice given here relfects the information given in these books.
Also most LFS have an interest in staying in business so their first priority is sales, followed by giving advice that will make you sucessful.
People here have an interest in generally showing off how much they know, which means they really like to be right.
If you're just starting your tank then your ammonia levels should be ridiculous.
Adding a bunch of LS or LR can make it high as commonly there is die off when ever you add some, so adding lots can cause a big spike, especially in a 24 gal. Also anything under 40 gallon is a bigger challenge, which is commonly mentioned on this site.
As far as the tank, it looks good, but it's well documented that Mandarins rarely live in small enclosures and generally don't seems as healthy. It's a grazing animal and it needs more than 50 gallons generally to avoid depleting it's food source. Maybe you'll get lucky, but generally I consider it a death sentence. I don't beleive in owning a fish till I know lots about it and know I can be safe owning it. I don't like trying to prove people wrong with animals lives. I am sure you could prove a great dane could live in a small city apartment, but it doesn't mean it's what's best for the animal. Buying fish to save them just encourages the business, which means next week there'll be even more fish in the same situation. It is your perogative to purchase what you want, but it's also anyone's perogative to criticize it.

so whats the difference if i buy it and take it home and have it die in my tank where it has live rock and sand rather then in a pet store where it would die in a tiny little tank....and if it dies in the tank the pet store would just order more...so if i buy it take it home and it has a chance to survive or i leave it in the pet store and it dies and the pet store buys more of them....if i had a choice id choose going home with someone...but hey thats just me....

Brandon, I give you props on your tank. It looks good so far. But I gotta give my opinion on that mandarian goby. IMO they are hard to keep only because you need tons of live rock, I mean when I say tons..i really mean A LOT of live rock that can be usually kept in 60gal tanks. The more the live rocks, the more the pods. Ive had one for 2months until it slowly starved. I learned it the hard way. But hopefully you can somehow someway get the pods to reproduce so much that there will be lots of pods in ur tank for the goby to feed on. Good luck, and give me some updates on how its doing.
I truly, like you believe that it doesnt matter how hard some people say certain things can be kept, because I have a seahorse( almost for a year now) and people say they are hard to keep. In my opinion, they have been moderate to keep and not that hard at all and to top that, I have been keeping it in a NANO tank..WITH fish. Let me know how ur tank is going!

my mandarin eats the brine shrimp that i feed to my other fish so it has another food source while constantly picking stuff off my rocks so its not even like hes not eating...
