thats what my lfs told me is there any truth to that? i brought home three cardinals last night and one of them is dead this morning. the only thing i can think of would be stress of acclimating or that the other two cardinals maybe picked on him but i think thats a little extreme. what do you guys think?

Your LFS was giving you an excuse. The cardinal may not have been healthy to begin with. Did you notice bite marks or anything on him?

I don't really believe this at all, it all depends, but normally if you acclimate correctly and the fish doesn't have ich than it should live...

i thought cardinals do better in groups of three or more...species like clowns are the ones that don't do well with three....

It depends on what kind of cardinal. There are some, like orangestriped, that do well in groups of 5+. Others are best house singly or in pairs, except in very large tanks.

well, i dont know why your cardinal died, and im sorry for your loss. but what your LFS said about 1 of three new fish die isnt true. out of the seven fish i purchased, only one of them have died, and that was because of a damsel bullying it to death.

yea i kind of thought that was an excuse but i didnt know for sure. they are bangaii cardihals. i cant figure out why it died its bothering me. i didnt actually buy them my dad did so it might not have been healthy but i think it should still have lived, the lfs is usually pretty good. i drip acclimated them but only for an hour and a half could that have made such a big difference?

Unless your water conditions are far from the LFS's, an hour and a half is fine. Bangaii are one of the breeds of cardinal that do not do well in groups except in larger systems. They are usually peaceful at first though. Did you see torn fins or anything like that? I really think the fish was just not healthy to begin with.

I think more fish are lost in our hobby than many people realize, or want to admit. Just look at everything they go throught to get to your living room. But to claim 1/3 are lost is absurd....maybe that would be a fair statement for *****, but not a reputable dealer.

Sir Q are bite marks always a sign of impending death on a male

Test your water and post the readings. We will see if we can figure this out for you.

Oh no, not at all. Many males, such as clowns, routinely take the abuse of their female and seem to rather enjoy it. My female still bites her male. He can't seem to get enough of it though.

So a bite may in fact be a contributing factor in some cases due to secondary infection. But with the short time line the OP suggested infection would not be the cause of death

Some bites can be bad enough to cause death overnight. Sometimes fish die from shock after an attack. Secondary infection can happen from bites as bacteria sets in. If no severe bites were present, then I do not think that it was the cause of death here. I don't know if the LFS had these Bangaii together in the tank there or not. They will fight with each other and that can result in death, or the fish that is being chased will hide in the rock work and die. There is no real way of knowing in this case without specific details.
