I was looking at getting a small open brain, and I was curious how to tell if its heathy and so forth... I've seen it a couple of times look like its smooth and soft lookin and other times it spikey and platey lookin. How can I tell if its healthy or even alive....

I'm by far no expert but have had a green one for about two years now. During the day they look soft and somewhat puffy. When bothered they contract close to the skeleton making it look rigid. I think as long as you see no tears in the flesh and it has a lot of green or red coloring it is safe to buy. Best advice, if you have any doubts don't buy it.

another thing to look for is to make sure the flesh is not receding from the base. The flesh should wrap around to the bottom side of the skeleton.
