i just got my skimmer and i have a 60 gal FOWLR for now.
its next to my bed and i have a timer for it Off at 2am and on at9am. is it ok to have it on and off during its break period of 1-2 weeks? will the on and off of about 6-7 hours affect it?

I prefer to keep mine running 24/7. The only thing that's going to happen by turning it off, is you won't be taking out waste. Which might eventually build up over time and raise nitrates. Another option is to buy some earplugs, that is what I ended up doing about the noise in my room.
Good luck.

In my opinion:
It will not hurt a thing. However, My skimmer was more active at night when the lights had ben out for a while than during the daytime. Maybe just my tank though..

It's best to keep it running 24/7, bdubbya is right in saying that the waste can build up.. Along with taking out harmful wastes and excess nutrients.. Skimmers oxygenate the water well, turning it off wouldn't be fatal, but it would definetly make your inhabitants feel better with it on!
