Opinions on lighting ?

Hello people

I would like to upgrade my lighting on my 55 gallon tank. I have looked at several sites online that people have mentioned, and there still seems to be several ways to go. I have narrowed my choice down to either VHO or PC. I most likely will build a new DIY hood, the one I have now is a p.o.s. that came with the tank ( single crappy 48" 40 watt ) that I may end up using over my tool bench in the garage LOL. Anyway ... any opinions or experiences would be helpful.
Oh yeah ... right now I have about 40lbs LR with plans to increase to around 60-70 lbs. I plan to start out with some "beginner" soft corals, polyps, mushrooms, etc. But if I'm going to upgrade my lighting, I don't want to limit myself for other more light demanding species in the future. Any thoughts which way I should go? What number of bulbs, types and wattage are a good all around choice ? The Ice Cap systems sound impressive. I want to get this right the first time !
Thanks

I use uri vho's and ice cap products, I have good growth in my invertebrates, and my corraline algaes. I would recommend vho's to anyone with a tank that is 20" deep or shallower.
