Opinions on powerheads

Hi all...setting up a new 90 Gal, going slow, reading all your posts helps a lot.
Question: In your opinions, is it okay to set up several smaller power heads (i.e. Rio 600's) all over the tank rather then a few blasters? (Rio 1700, up). This is strictly for water circulation, the filter and skimmer have their own pumps. Thanks.

HI,
Well for starters, I would go with maxi jets :) a much better PH in my opinion. Ok for the question, it is totally up to you, the more PH you have the more random current you can obtain. You are looking for a minimum of 10X the total capacity of the tank. It really dosen't matter how you get it, just most folks don't like the tank being littered with PH is all.

i use hagen aquaclear powerheads and have never had any problems with them. i have also heard that the maxi jets are good as well, but they aren't readily available in my area. i would try to stay clear of rios, if possible. also, i would consider the effect of several smaller powerheads on the temperature increase in your tank. also, larger powerheads are much more effective at moving water long distances in your tank than small powerheads. hope this helps :)

do not use the Rios. try the maxijets or penguins. even the aquaclears are better. there have been many a posts about the hazards of the rio pumps, so it would be in your best interests to skip 'em. hth

Maxi-jets are great. They are designed to work with wave makers. They do not make that horrible grinding noise when they start up which others make. (that is the impeller grinding inside the pump)

I'm with tru conch on the ph selection. Those rio's are not worth the money. But if you do not mind the sight of several power heads then go for it.
Also, are you framiliar with lock line? It's the black high density plastic that snaps together and usually has a flat outing . You see it alot in tanks. If not go to my link and check out the pic's. You could just by larger pump and plumb it to as many places in your tank as you like. I know you said you did'nt want big pumps, but it's just a suggestion.CLICK HERE TO SEE MY REEF.

I agree that Maxijet is the way to go. Dependable and the wavemaker option with the PH really make a difference. I think too many PH's will make the tank seem cluttered. Just my opinion-Bob
