It is not possible to know the exact space a fish needs, but enough tangs have been kept in 55 gallon tanks before to know it doesn't work. They will not live and thrive there. Sure, a small yellow tang could start in a 55 gallon tank, but it will need a much larger tank as it grows to its adult size.
