Can petrified wood be used as a base rock? I checked at one lfs today and that's all they had.

Hey Azonic, I have a LFS place here that sells indo pacific "base rock". It's live rock, but it's the break off and chunks people don't like or want because it isn't very pretty. Sells it for about $2.00 a pound. It's Jeff's Exotic fish.. Check out www.exoticfish.com they don't have the base rock there, but the live fiji rock is $2.45 to $3.50 a pound.

Only about half of the rock in my tank was purchased as live rock. All the rest is base rock. Some of it is rock that was sitting by the side of the road.
I know, you think I'm crazy for doing this.
It was off of a city truck that dumped a load of limestone. It was perfectly safe.
I have so much rock now in my 55 gal. that I now have enough to start off the bigger tank that I am building. There are even some hardshell feather dusters that have been burrowing in the limestone. Lots of coraline algea.
