my orange sponge keeps on growing algea on it and I rub it off with my fingers in the water, but today I noticed that the sponge with is in the shape of a tennis raquet is torn at the top and the top seems to be getting thinner.

Don't try to get the algae off yourself. Put the sponge in a dark place in your aquarium and the algae will clear up. Sponges normally grow in dark waters, under overhangs, in caves or at depth. Keep it out of the light.
