300 setup. Jim/AC/Novice anybody else
Ok... I'm ordering the stuff for my 300 this week. I've had this tank for a few months now and getting sick of looking at it empty in the basement. It's going to be sharks/rays and a few bony fishes and maybe an eel or two.
1. plenum or no plenum?
2. how deep sand ?
I'm ordering Indo Pacific Carib Sea probably around 3-4'' of substrate for the rays to bury themselves in.
Does this sound alright? Would you recommend the plenum or no?
I'm also ordering a Kent Nautilus EX 48'' recommended for 750 gal tank, and a mag 24 for it. Think that will be enough? Also going to run a 500 gal wet/dry. Dolphin return @ 2800gph. Jalli 800w.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

I wouldnt bother with a plenum. For a sand bed 2" should be fine. Rays dont burry themselves that deep.
I'm not familiar with that the nautilus skimmers you mentioned but it uses the same pump that my 32" 500g rated MR-3 uses so I'm thinking it should do fine.
Does that say a 500 gallon wet/dry or do you mean 50 gallon? If its 500 then DAMN that is one big wet/dry lol, although I think you ment 50. Either that or the wet/dry is rated for 500g.

Yeah, I meant it's rated for a 500 gal tank. It's probably about 50 gallons too by the measurements . I ordered all the stuff today, should be up and running in a few weeks. Gonna order three bags of live sand to get things goin a little quicker too.
thanks for the info

I agree with Jim27, I wouldn't mess with the plenum. I'm not familiar with that skimmer, but your pumps seem right. That's one thing I screwed up on my 320. I need to get a larger return pump. I don't know what the Jalli is, I'm assuming lights. You might want to consider a UV sterilizer. I have one on each of my two shark tanks due to getting green water, that is algea suspended in the water column. Let us know how it's going maybe post some pictures. Good luck

thanks AC, the jalli is a heater 800W.
I got a 36w sterilizer on my 180 right now I'm thinking about taking off of it and putting it on my 300 but unsure. I might just buy a aqua they seem pretty good.
I get so pissed every time I try to attach pictures it tells me they're too big. I'm not exactly an ace on a computer buy I've been playing around with my canon software trying to size them down, still haven't figured it out but I will eventually.

AC: I use a 18 watt uv oceanclear and lately i think my tank looks a little green should i replace the uv bulb. I thought it was just the tint in my canopy glass.

Oceanclear,
I believe that the uv bulbs are suppose to be good for about one year. If the bulb isn't old you may want to see if your flow through the sterilizer is to high thus not giving enough contact time. If your not sure if the water is green or just the tint of the glass, you can get a white cup and check to see how the water looks in it. HTH
