Hey guys, I would like to add another computer down in my theater/240 tank room. Now I have a DSL connection upstairs that is on my main computer. What other equipment other than a new computer will I need to hook up the net down there? I'm not sure on how this will work.

I would go with a wireless DSL router, preferably d-link, and wireless cards in both pc's. They come with easy to follow directions, and work well if your justing wanting to share the DSL line.

most newer computers already have the cards so if they do the only things that you will need is the hub/router and cabling to run to the computers. the only other thing I suggest is to get a good firewall protection to put on the computers. I have had several attempts to access my computers and while they are on the are connected and the are all shared access. all it takes is a program to help control the security issues that come with a home metwork.

wireless cards and routers are good but are primarily used with laptops if you are going desktop I think the hard wired is better but utlimately up to you and whats available when you go to get the equipment.
but if its for your home theater room then you might think about a laptop for more ease and moveableility.

Wireless is the easiest quickest way to go. The cards aren't to badly priced, and beats running cable. As far as firewall if you use the router turn on NAT, and close any ports that you don't use, and should be fine. I don't really worry about my home pc, as there's nothing on it to worry about.

We have 4 computers on wireless it is the best way to go. Get a laptop then you can have it anywhere in the house.

First of all let me say that I have NOT done this so I am not an expert on it. However I just had to upgrade to Windows XP. Some good things some bad things. However it does seem that XP is geared toward running a home network. In fact when I first set it up I had a little trouble with my internet connection. The reason was that I finally realized I was trying to cofigure a home network connection instead of my internet connection. Once I realized that I did the correct configuration and I had not problems after that. No I am not as dumb as I sound (I think:) )

Scott,
I have been buying the D-Link routers from Best Buy with good rebates. Wireless would be easy for you with XP, it will cost a little more though. Once you decide the route you want to go you can PM me with any questions. I am actually seting up to run an antena from my shop and cover 3 blocks to my house with a directional wireless system. I have owned a computer store since 1998 and do quite a bit of router/high speed sharing for home and office use.

Well I have wired at home, since I set up my network by myself when I was like 11 and wireless wasn't that popular. I want to get wireless now, but first I want to get a Cannon G3 cam and then go wireless since I have a laptop. Go with a wireless Linksys 4 port wireless router. So if you have comps at home, you can connect them using the 4 ports, and if you have a laptop, you can go wireless at the sametime. JMO of course.
