ElfDoctors, small world I own some land and a cabin about 2 1/2 hours north and east. Beautiful country - we plan on retiring there.

My real name is Steven Bonebrake, so it would be especially cool if I became an orthopedic surgeon. There is a dentist in my town that is named Dr. Blood. Now that is spooky.

Kevin - At least you are not in the square root club! :D
Rick - It sure is beautiful up here. That's obviously part of the reason I stayed. With so much public land it is likely to stay that way in spite of all the growth that has been occuring in the last decade. There are lots of people who retire up here -particularly snowbirds.
Steven - I'm not sure that your name will inspire trust as an orthopedist. How about infectious diseases? The common name for Dengue Fever (a tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes) is Breakbone Fever. We also still need family doctors. :)

I have thought about family practice. I am really hung up about what field I want to specialize in, but I have plenty of time to decide! (I still have a year and a half of undergrad...)

From what I understand, most specialists didn't decide on what they were going to specialize in until they were halfway through with medical school.
IMHO, I wouldn't worry about what kind of practice you want at this point in time. Just concentrate on getting in to medical school right now. I would suggest that you do some shadowing and volunteer work outside of school. That looks great on med apps...

Dacia - Uniqueness of people has little to do with genetics. Identical twins are certainly different even though they are genetically identical. It is essential to have a good understanding of evolutionary topics for a good career in medicine. There are many other areas of human understanding that are not as straightforward as certain groups try to make them out to be. I would suggest terminating this part of our discussion as it may get censored by a moderator.
Hmmm...it was actually meant to be a joke...
