We've put around $3500.00 into our 55gal and 20, bought everything new and got no great deals, but I do have a friend who is moving and giving us her 55 gal set up, which will help a lot since we are now planning the upgrade to 125.
Has everyone forgotten that Mike S is Mr Bubbles? Just ignore him. A month ago he only had a 10 gal and a giant sponge.

mike s, youve been given TOO many second chances... every time you screw yourself with your big mouth'a flappin and you spout off all these lies... and all the problems youve caused before, if it was up to me you wouldnt be allowed back :| all we ask for is proof for what you say and what ever happened to those photos you were supposed to develop and post... oh say over a month ago??? I dont believe one word that you type...I dont even belive youre 15... no 15-year old I know has spelling/grammar as horrible as you... and I have a 90 gallon thats been up for almost 8 months... I have more in it than you, yes I rushed at first, made mistakes, cost me money, but theres no way in hell that I even have CLOSE to $9000!!!!!!!!!!!!! and when you came on as bubbles a couple months ago and switched to mike s a couple weeks ago (with all the others in between...) how could you set that tank up that fast and get it all in there?????
to the cost issue, Im 16, and Im a student... looking back it really saddens me that Ive spent (probably) just over 2 grand on my 90..I should be saving for university... right after I set mine up I met some people who could have gotten me used equipment for less than half the price... when I set it up It was about $1700 (tank, lights, stand, sand, equipment, 140+lbs lr...), but considering all of the money Ive spent on bulbs, LIVESTOCK, salt, accessories... its probably around ~$2300...
the saltwater hobby is such a love/hate thing... I just wish it wasnt so dang expensive :|

I was referring to what I've spent. I wasn't taken either. I have a 55 gal reef that's been up a year and is loaded. I have just completed setting up a 210 reef with a 75 gallon sump that sucked up most of the cash. Had the stand and canopy custom made from red Mahogony, then cherry stained locally. With the tank it stands at 7-1/2 feet tall. All that hardware, and all those 2-400 dollar orders from online fish sites like this one add up. Plus, with a program like quicken, every little purchase can be traced. So when I make a trip to Lowes for $20 worth of tubing and some clamps, it gets added in. You'll be suprised how much money you spend in small trips like that. The big tank has a lot of hardware that cost some dough: MH 250W x3, 6 VHO 6 foot tubes with three Icecap ballasts, Aqualogic 1/3 HP chiller, Aquacontroller 2 controller with all software, Ozonizer (plus ozonizer with built-in controller on my 55 gal reef), Enormous Skimmer, Calcium reactor with oversized CO2 tank, two Ampmaster 3000 pumps (one for the skimmer/one for return) refugium lighting, moonlight (those things cost a lot for a stinking light! ;) ) and the list goes on. Notto mention all the livestock that is already in the big tank, plus the stff in the small tank. It adds up. Unfortuanately, I have a way to track it all, and it's quite depressing when I pull it all up like this. Trust me, I wasn't taken. Everything was bought new (I will not buy high dollar stuff like this used) and was price compared accross the net. The stand set me back about $3000 because of teh type of wood I demanded as well as the trimwork on it. Wanted something that looked like fine furniture, not a fish stand. I'll get some pics up soon.

Well I have put in about 1800-2300 into my 45 gallon reef. As for you Mike S it is very amazing that you have spent 9000 on your tank and all. You say your dad has bought it all but yet you cant afford a digital camera. The reason I say this is a month or so ago you said I cant afford a digital camera so I have to take pictures and post them using a scanner. But yet your dad will fork out 9000 for your aquarium come on.

on my 137 approx 7k right now. I think i am happy with it though so no more major changes and the tank is just about done IMO. so i will have to start working on a new one

Just thinking about it scares me! We now have 4 aquariums. a 55, two 105's and just got a 46 bow front today. I don't really want to know how much it costs. It is worth every penny!

It's not a spat really...its actually pretty darn hilarious!
We all know its easy to sink money into these tanks, but the people doing so are mature, full-time working adults who have an income. Mike S. is a 15 year old kid who says his dad pays for everything. It's amazing how he is the only one (or almost the only one) who has posted in this thread pushing the $10,000 mark. He's just a kid! I have children and have the money to buy them 100 tanks, but I would never drop that kind of money on a hobby. Just my opinion.
