My husband has one that with what it has should be faster than my HP but it is the slowest computer I have ever seen. I love my HP and HP Laptop.

In my experience, Dells has been a great.. I just opened a new school for my district in August and I bought 250 Dell machines .... So far I only had one memory and one graphics card go bad.... Since I never have to work on the machines I have plenty of time for the 2 tanks I set up there!!!
Bradttu: I am going to look into the multi burner.. I just had to burn 80 CDs and it took me forever!!!

I haven't had any problems with my HP. My husbands Gateway always locks up on him and is slow as can be and then like I said they had Dell's running the cash registers where I use to work and they crashed every 5 minutes it seemed like. I now work for my dad and I think he had his computer built by someone in town he knows but I think my mom might have a Dell. Don't know if she has had any problems with it or not. Like I said all I was going on is the ones where I used to work.

the dell problem probably was a conflict with the software they are using
I run a computer store, and to be honest, I hate dells
we build our own and dells prices are great, and the service is almost as good. I almost never see a dell except for upgrading.
Gateway and HP and compaq on the other hand, keep us in business, LITERALLY. As a business person, I wish everyone had them. We makew so much less selling them than we do on repairing the other named systems.
my favorites, based upon this are(in this order)
gateway
hp
compaq
and other local stores(custom built)
oh, and the 256 MB video cards are out, but having problems, matrox builds one. By the time I get my 4 gig AMD, nvidia will have theirs working and released, it will be this summer, I am sure.

:D Takes about two months now to be outdated.

That is true. My boss just bought a new complete Dell setup for $500 something plus shipping after rebates.

I have a 3 1/2 year old IBM Aptiva that I bought at Best Buy. It is a dinosaur. Was supposed to be the latest greatest thing when I bought it, but no doubt it was obsolete before I even got it unpacked. It was my first computer so didn't really check into them much before I got it. Just saw it in the store one day and bought it on impulse. I've had fun learning to use it and do nothing but play on it.
But Dell.....I'm heading your way soon.......:D :D
P.S. My husband and kids have Gateways and have nothing but problems with them. My friend also just had to ditch his 2 year old Gateway. Something about a motherboard froze up and couldn't be fixed.

Gateway is what my husband has and he also has nothing but trouble with his. It is always freezing and is really slow.

It might have been that and the fact that the lady in charge of the computers didn't know jack about them.

I run a gateway at work - the only good thing on it is the 21" monitor. they are junk!!!!
At home I run the latest Dell, just got it and it rocks. I have had 0 problems what so ever. Dell has some good packages for a good price, but I did the build your own system and put the best of everything in so I wouldn't have to upgrade so soon. Still only ran me about $2500. Well worth it. 2.5 gig processor, on a dsl. just for kicks I opened 4 different bb's and ran all of them at mach speed, and all on the screen at the same time, bouncing back and forth, just resized the windows. :D

i am currently tring to make my own comp, with the help of 2 friends. currently my budget is pretty low, 700 dollars or less. I am not planning to buy a brand other then a Shuttle barebones http://www.directron.com/sn41g2.html . I can get a free case from a friend. I want a AMD XP atleast 2 ghz, 512 ddr ram, 40 gig harddrive and an AGP videocard. I am going to play games and want something upgradable. Should i just make a comp from scratch or just get the shuttle motherboard and then just add nessary componets? Since the mother board in the shuttle already has a decent videocard, i can hold off on the videocard.
What should i do... i havent worked on computers since 1996, i dont know as much as i used to

The reason Dell, Compaq and HP suck.... IMO...
They all have there own software loaded. Plain and simple. Hardware rarely breaks but conflicts occur often. Espically when you start adding stuff. Also, Most do not come with an OEM copy of windows, just a repair ro recovery CD. It severly limits your ability to upgrade.
Ont the other hand, The prices are good. Lets even a poor person have a fast computer.
Me, I build my own now. I have owned others in the past but now, with prices low and the fact they are sooo easy, I build all mine and some for friends.
You can also build your own. You can even by MB tested and configured. All you do is plug, load and play. Not rocket science.
Me, I have an AMD 1800xp, 256mb PC2100 ram, Epox MB, Gforce2 64mb Video, and a really crappy old HP hard drive. That will be my next upgrade. It is a 5400rpm, I need a 7200. So If anyone has one at a good price let me know;)
(I know the memory could be faster but it works great and never had any problems) Processor stays at a cool 101deg. F. Constant.

forget the barebones and buy incividual pieces, with 700, you could do a pretty good system that way.
esp if you already have some of the parts
case, cdrom or HD and such form your old system
We have gotten barbones, adnmost of them are not that great of a deal, may save a very few dollars, and parts will probably be of lesser quality.

Building your own is probably the best way to go for price and preformance if you know what your doing. If you don't then I send everyone to Dell. They may have their own software installed but their service is almost unbeatable!
fshhub - I love Amd's. Have been with them since they stopped writting the MicroCode for Intel! I'm waiting to replace my dual Athon MD server with a quad Opteron. Do you have any idea if they will be offering the Quad in April? None of the reading I've been keeping up with has said one way or another.

get a good power suply, we had some problems wiht cheaper ones, and a ps is not a ps.
some of the cheaper ones, the capacitors are made substandard. and if a ps goes, it can take anything or nothing with it.
IMO, onle get antec if you want good ps.
The case, is the last place I would worry about spending money. If you have one(even used) get a god video card or more memory. That wil be more enjoyable to you than a pretty case. xp2200 is a great processor, I have one and love it.
Also, the board, is a great one, but do they have the same model available without raid?
I am running raid, but most people do not, even if they do know what it is. If you won't be using it, it often could save you 30 or even more dollars. 30 bucks is the difference in a better vid card. Or sound, or a nice set of speakers. or most of an extra 256 MB of ram. and if you plan to use XP, memory is a major bonus.

the serial ATA is a raid controller (and good luck trying to find a serial ata drive), u can pick that board up for like 130 at googlegear.com and the sound that built in beats the audigy, and comes closes to audigy 2.. not bad for a board that cost just a tad more than one of those cards alone
i have one, ryebread has one too.. .#1mb out right for AMD's
