Lets keep this a clean debate. This is info from my July 2003 edition of motor cyclist.
measured hp = measured torque = corrected 1/4 times
suzuki gsxr 101.7 = 45.8 = 11.08@123.54
kaw zx-6r 107.8 = 46.7 = 10.87@128.42
cbr 600 rr 105.4 = 43.7 = 10.94@127.13
yamaha R6 105.4 = 44.7 = 11.01@125.27
So as you can see from these numbers the gsxr was actually the slowest bike out of the bunch. The R6 has been middleweight bike of the year for the last 2 yrs.

I'll have to rethink what I want now after seeing these numbers. I like the GSX-R but that is one beautiful bike you have there also. I have been thinking about the 750, but if a 600 has this much punch, I might want to go with that. This would be my first sportbike.

Tangman I think a new 600 would have plenty of what you want. They really get up and go. Plus sport bikes ride different then cruisers. There are a lot of sweet bikes out there to think about. Just do your home work and buy what you like.

Whaen you say almost how close are we talking? I looked at the yamaha website but couldn't find the hp on them. They are a 347cc 2 stroke 2 cylinder I highly dought they make that much hp. Plust the figures in my post are rear wheel hp not crank power. Plus the banshee weighs more than my ninja. LOL

Yeah but if your a new rider think of all the money you will lose when you drop it. Thats one of the reasons I chose the yzf600, it is my first bike, has good power but not something I will cry over when I wreck it. Have any of you taken the MSF class?

Well my buddies and I seem to get new bikes almost every year so it's not a problem. I would love to have a GSXR 1000 but couldn't afford that bike this year.

I've been told that by more than one person, but like I said, I've never riden a sportbike before so I want something that I can feel confident on but still respect. If I buy a sportbike, I'll be doing wheelies and stoppies with the rest of the guys I know so I know I'll be dropping it a few times. I can take busting up a $6,000 bike over a $10,000 one a little easier.

My gixxer 600 does just fine for me. As for buying a 750 you're
going to be paying almost the same for insurance as on the 1000, thus this is why most people go for the 1000. However the 750 is still baaaad. Another point is when the kaw and honda are unchanged in the next two years, the gixxer will have its new design by then and then the honda and kaw will be outdated. The 600 class is so tight that a few hp really don't make a damn difference on the street unless you are a VERY good rider. The manufacturers just switch places every few years it seems. One has better brakes one year, the other better suspension the next year and so on. The point is unless you take your bike to the track and really push it you'll never see the numbers that they spin in magazines and be able to appreciate the cornering capabilities anyway. Another reason the kaw is faster is because it has 636 cc of displacement, where the other bikes have less than 600. If you gave the gixxer an extra 36 cc of displacement my guess is that it would turn better numbers too.
that's my ten cents

Go back and read my 3rd post. I never said the gsxr was a bad bike. I just meant if someone was going to go buy a new 600 right now I would get the kaw or honda. Now when suzuki upgrades the gsxr I might get one of them.

Sorry man, didn't mean to make that sound like an attack on Kawasaki, I was just comparing a few differences. Actually you made a really good choice. If I was going to buy a new 600 this summer I would have went with the kaw too, sweet ride. The only thing crappy about michigan is that we have no-fault insurance and insurance prices are outrageous here. I pay 1200 for summer full coverage and winter theft coverage. The extra 36 cc puts your sportbike into another category here and boofs your insurance price bigtime.

That really sucks man. I turned 25 this last winter and my insurance on this bike for full coverage all year is only $265
