Your CD Rom could have gone bad also.... Strange but true... took me forever to find the same problem with windows98... Was in Bios, safe mode and DOS. But once Windows normaly loaded, it was gone. Grabbed another off the shelf and it solved my issue. Not saying it's the same problem, but it was my problem..

If you have already created an Emergency Startup Floppy, try booting with that. Then use your original OS installation CD to boot (at appropriate prompt.) If it boots (because startup disk has a bunch of generic CD Rom Drivers), you know that your CD is OK. Just a thought.
