OT: Remembrance

Thanks! Couldn't think of who it was. I've heard the other song you mentioned as well. It is also excellent and I'm sorry I didn't mention it in my post above. If I remember correctly, the procedes generated by that song were donated to the victims and to the recovery effort. If this is true, my hat goes off to Allan Jackson.

Just another thing to think about while the 911 incident is being remembered.
Soon the Congress will debate the Patroit Act II. Although Civil Liberties is not something that many of us think about very often, maybe we should also be aware of what has happened as a result of 911. One should ask the question as to whether or not the people who died on that tragic day would want to see their families rights and civil liberties be restricted as a result of what happened that day. Many of those who died were of MIddle Eastern decent.
For example... There are US citizens being held w/o the right to counsel or if they are given that right the US Dist. Att. can monitor the cofidential communications exchanged. Also little did you know that everything you get at the library is being watched by BIG BROTHER. In addition, thousands of US att. have been able to get wiretaps and pen registers on a showing of much less than probable cause. On Monday I went to a symposium on Civil Rights and Ethics, which focused on Rights and responsibilities of criminal attorneys after 911. Let me tell you, its really scary the things that the government can do now that it could not traditionally do before 911.
For those of you who say well thats the price of being safe and secure after 911. IN MY OWN OPINION give me liberty or give me death. This county has made mistakes like this before. The internment of the Japanese, Lincoln suspending habeus corpus during the civil war, the Macarthy Hearings during the 1950's. This country is no stranger to the mistakes of the past and quick swift actions without a consideration to the ramifications of the decision will lead, as it has always done, to big mistakes. If I had died on that day I would be appalled at the actions taken our governement has taken thus far.
Just something to think about...

If you are doing something that Big brother may be concerned about then maybe you should be watched and mopnitored. When certain liberties degrade the safety of our country then some liberties need revoked or changed.
If you would have died that day you would be appalled at nothing because you would be dead:mad:

Actually read the federalist papers, some of our founding fathers had a very different idea about what the public should do when the government takes away our liberties under pretense of security.

Do you also feel more antigun laws should be created each time some one is shot? Even when the person who committed the crime already broke dozens of laws?

its not like the government is spying on everyone. dont freak out about this (whoever wrote that post). its not like they are keeping tabs on you if you go to the library and check out winni the poo. i also think that the big brother thing is an ok idea, cause they have probably stopped future incidents from happening. but guess what? they get no credit because they are preventing FUTURE problems from arising

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

way to go folks - I just wanted a non-politicized remembrance of 9/11 and the folks impacted. You want an OT to discuss personal liberties, etc. please start one ....
I will go back to my original request:
All - I know that there have been a lot of 9/11 shows/tributes/reembrances on TV and such today - but as you read this take a moment of silence to remember those that were lost and those that they left behind. Especially all of the children who are now missing a parent.
Thank you.

Actually I'm glad you just used that analogy "Winnie the poo". Now you understand that similar cartoon/kids characters are banned for their "western" themes in other countries? It may seem completely trivial to you/us. But to other governments, its a major issue. Now, our government wants to decide and have oversight of what we see, hear, and read. Do you really want them to choose whether you can read "winnie the poo"?
As for not giving any credit to these organizations. Why was the secret service, fbi, cia, nsa, homeland security organization created? Were they not all created after huge intelligence failures? Instead of trying to adjust an agency, our government-by its nature, just wants to grow larger and take on more powers. Heres just two quick examples:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/09/14/an....ap/index.html
http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/09/15/fi...iot/index.html
Side note: Anyone see what just happened to the other hijacker in court? Even though we all know that he isn't a good person, its scary that the government will try "double jeopardy" on him in military court since they can't get their way in a public courtroom. Whatever happened to it being better to have 100 convicts go free rather than improperly prison one person?

IN case you missed it - start your own OT thread .... asking for this one to be closed.

Sorry Overanalyzer, we should all take a moment to mourn for the victims.
