I'm headed to Aruba in May. I'd love to learn how to scuba so I can check out the reefs down there. Can anyone give me some tips on where's a good place to take lessons? How much is decent equipment? Anything else I might need to consider before I go.
thanks in advance

Sorry,
Dont have much info for you, other than you will never regret it.......I will look at some recipts and get a good website for some equipment from Spain. They ship DHL and used to include the shipping in their prices.

You can get lessons there. The wife and I went to Aruba last year. Really awesome place to go. Not the prettiest island I've been to (Maui rules!), but plenty to do and great snorkeling. We went out right near the Golf course and saw alot of cool fish and some coral. First time?

find a local dive shop that has a program. good programs usually last for about 2 months. I would stay away from any program that will certify you in 2 weeks. You should have about 20 class room hours, 10-12 hours in the pool, and at least 2 open water dives before you are certified.
I know this sounds like a lot, but this is your life underwater, and what you don't know can kill you.
decent equipment will run you approx $3000.00 in total. you don't need everything though, I would buy mask, snorkel, fins, a bc, regulators, and a computer. the dive boats there will have weights, (to heavy to fly with). rent your tanks. I personally own all of my equipment including my own tanks, however, I have been diving for 8 yrs, and for many of them had my own dive business doing 10-15 dives per week. For the infrequent diver, just the equipment I mentioned will be fine for now. Dive equipment holds your life. this is NOT something you want to skimp on.
have fun:)

I agree with newreefers,
It is your life, dont take chances. I am SSI certified which was a lot of classroom time.

Whatever you do do not get certified through some dive resort on the island. I agree, it is your life, and though it is a safe sport, it is easy to over react. Doing so can cost you your life. I think those resorts that certify people in a day or weekend should be shut down.
I agree that a course over a few months is best...the longer, the better.

Do you have a sports chalet around you (To the mods this is not a plug). We have one here that offers scuba classes.

I would just take a look in the phone book....there are lots of SCUBA stores around with classes. I was certified at National Diving Center there in Friendship Heights, just around DC. Look for NAUI and PADI certifications are some of the most common. I am a NAUI girl myself :)

I learned from SSI, IMHO dont learn in Aruba. Its an amazing experience SCUBA, and its really not that complicated all you have to do is watch out for your oxygen time and depth, and I would also reccomend how to compass dive because if you get lost its no fun. And I would like to add something else:D , if you get the chance or any of the divers here, go Nitrox diving. Find research about it and youll have a lot more oxygen, time and youll be less worried. Way better than regular diving oxygen.

Sorry for the bad advice. I just remember seeing lots of people taking lessons there.

Awesome! thanks for all the info so far. Keep the recommendations coming. I will be staying at the Costa Linda, dad's timeshare :)
As for classes, I'm definitely more comfortable getting certified here. I found a PADI shop in town, just trying to figure out if I can afford it. $300 for six, 4 hr classes and a couple of pool sessions. Otherwise i'm going to do snorkling.

Go to a local dive shop and talk to them about taking classes. To do it properly it will take a couple months. DO NOT take classes at a dive shop (resort) that says they can certify you in hours. Remember it is your life that you are messing with. Learn Scuba the right way and it is fantastic:cool:
