OT - Universities in US

Tim, since your tuition costs are so low, tell me how to go to college in GB. I am a pre-medicince student here in the US, and plan to go to medical school somewhere when I finish. Do you guys have cheap medical schools in GB? E-mail me.
bonermeister@hotmail.com
Some schools you may consider are: Michigan State University, Princeton Theological Seminary, Aberdeen University in Scotland, Denver Seminary, Brandeis University, Hebrew University, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Asbury Theological Seminary, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, University of Durham in England, Ashland Theological Seminary, Divinity School of Duke University, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Talbot Theological Seminary, University of Birmingham in England, and Univeristy of Munich in Germany.
I am totally serious about medical schools in England. I am too poor to go to medical school in the states, it would cost me between $80,000 to $300,000.
Hope to hear from you soon my friend.
:D ;) :)

Bonermeister- I was listening to the radio and heard about www.abettercareer.org . Supposedly it's a site that helps people interested in medical professions find financial aid. I haven't checked it out yet, not time, but I am in the same boat with you. I want to go to Emory and my husbands flippin out.
Good luck to both of you guys.

At Duke University here in NC, you can study theology and religion...and ALL of their Ph.D. students are given generous stipends and scholorships that pays for the outrageous cost of getting an education. I interviewed with them last year for their Ph.D. program in Immunology, and I found out that the stipend was a little less than $20,000 every year plus grants paid for tuition costs.
I turned it down, however, to go into a program in Biomedical Technology...which I dropped out of because they wanted me to kill animals to learn about life (something I REFUSE to do)...now I finally found my niche and I'm going into forensic science so I can use my biology and chemistry knowledge in a way that helps people without killing innocent little animals. And because the graduate program is federally funded, it's free too. :D  ;) Just a little something about me.
Anyway, grad programs (with the exception of prefessional schools such as med and law) are waaaaay cheaper than most people think...with all the funding, stipends, and scholarships out there, those of us lucky enough to get in don't have a lot of others to compete with for that money.

Just another idea. My brother is pre-med also at Vanderbilt. Right now he is on scholarship but he has the same medschool probleem since his current scholarships dont cover med school. One thing he has found is contracting out to a hospital, some hospitals will pay for school if you go work for them for a certain number of years.
Another option is the military, they are always looking for doctors, I believe they have the same type of program but with the added benefit of being a commissioned officer and starting off as a Captain after you finish school.
Just a few ideas I have heard, sorry Tim, neither of these will help you unless you were to change degrees heheh.

I looked into medical school as well when I was an undergrad. What I found out is that with a student loan, medical school is paid for...and the doctors that I talked to ALL said that the loan is paid for within 3 years or LESS of graduation from medical school, and they still were able to live in large homes, drive expensive as crap cars, etc...
It may look expensive at first, but these days with interest rates being as low as they are, you are free to choose whatever med school that accepts you knowing that it will be paid for soon.
And if you look at med schools in your own state, you will be surprised at how low their cost would be for you. UNC medical school was actually cheaper than what I paid for undergrad...tuition wise, anyway. What got me in undergrad was the cost of living on campus which was cheaper than getting an apartment. The Brody School of Medicine at ECU 2 years ago had a tuition bill of barely $800 a semester...UNC had a tuition bill for undergrads over $1000. Go figure.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I guess it doesn't really matter if I am in debt up to my eyeballs. Once I get out of school I won't have any trouble paying it off. It is just a scary feeling to think you owe someone or something over a quarter of a million dollars. I'll check out schools in Pennsylvania. I should probably go in-state if there is discounts. I didn't think it worked that way for medical school, but maybe it does.
:) Thanks again!

Tiffster, that site has a lot of info. I will have to check into it and see if some of those things correlate to my state. Thanks!

ALL colleges jack up the price for out-of-state residents!
My tuition next semester will be $1,500...approximately...but for someone who lives outside of NC it is actually closer to $5,000. I guess they think if you live farther away you have more money???
I know someone who went to med school in Pennsylvania...don't remember which one, but he is now a neurosurgeon, and his loan is already paid off. He graduated 3 and a half years ago. ;)

Hey Bonermeister,
I will be writing you an email straight after this post, or will add you to my messenger list if you are on that :)
Out of curiosity, where did you get that list of universities from? The UK government advices against going to Hebrew University (i presume that is the one in Israel we're talking about) because of safety. Durham and Birmingham - my current university (Cardiff) is joint top in the league for Theology with Birmingham, so not a lot of difference there. Durham is a good university over here but not that good for Theology, its 5 places behind my current university.
Thanks for all the response guys, starting to realise that British people are getting a bit of a bargain....and there are mass protests at the moment because they want to charge $4000 a year over here! We currently pay $2000 max, no matter what university, the best or the worst.
Thanks again guys,
Tim.

Try this link . It's not a huge college like Harvard, but it seems people from all over the US and internationally go here . I know it is religious based, and I am assuming religion may be taught there also, which kind though I am am not sure. Also not sure if PhD courses are offered, just passing on the link for you to look at. HTH some.
