OT: what is the best lap top/notebook pc

i am getting ready to graduate highschool and my graduation present is a laptop for college. i was wanting to know who makes the best laptop. price isn't really an issue. thanks in advance.

IMO. Dell or Compaq. I service laptops and I seem to get the fewest calls on the Dell's. Compaq's are a close second. I've heard good things about the Hewlett Packerd's, but havn't been servicing them long enough to get a feel for them yet.

I repair PC's as well. I like the IBM ThinkPad T-series and Compaq. I would avoid Dell or HP.

i got a dell latitude, and i love it. i can't see why anyone wouldn't want a dell. i've heard bad about compaqs. <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

Toshiba is the best notebook I know of we use them in service and they get banged around alot but they're still running. I have had IBM break Compaq break but the Toshiba satalite pro series notebook is very robust. The Dell Lat is Ok but the Toshibas out last and out perform them every time.

I'm in IT. I work on laptops all day. IMO go with an IBM T-Series Thinkpad. Very compact and everything is integrated (i like the floppy/dvd drive hot swap drivers). I also work on Dells, not quite as nice. Also Sony Vaio's are decent, some of them come with cd burners and have very clear screens.

also, as it will be used in college, be really careful, things tend to "disappear" from the dorm room when you arent looking. I just graduated last year (miss it sooo much) and saw this happen numerous times, anyway a desktop might be better in this regard. just a thought.

I love my IBM ThinkPad. Runs great with Windows 2000 Pro.

I work in IT also. We offer our managers a choice of dell(inspiron 8200) or IBM (A30) The ones with dells seem to like them better. also the service has been much quicker (usually same day) for home users it would be next day which is still pretty damn fast. I have 5 dells personally and i like them alot.
