I have had him for a couple hours and he can hear me whistle! I'm excited that will make it easier to train him.
I have read alot of dogs that are born white with blue eyes they put down at birth, so sad.

My dog learned signs, and I’m sure you can teach your dog the same. Puppy classes are great and will help you allot, with a dog that big you need control. You just have to be inventive at the onset until he understands what you want him to do, and then always use the chosen signal for each command. Being able to hear your whistle is fantastic.
If that picture was two months ago, I can’t wait to see the update.

I'm glad you researched. My mothers Dane was huge. Nothing was safe on the table or cupboards. lol I bet he grew a lot in two months.
Me weimeraner's knick name is houdini because he is a genius when it comes to stealing food. He is a very well behaved dog but he is soooo smart. He can get a pizza of the counter while we are in the same room without us seeing. He can actually walk so that his nails don't touch the ground and make noise. I don't even get mad anymore cause it's so amazing.

Oh, I thought the title was puppy, you mean a PONY !!
I LOVE danes. Sweetest creatures on the planet. My aunt has had a few of them (sadly they don't have a long life span)
First one was a white with black spots. Pebbles was her name. She ended up being a therapy dog. Her next was Elvis. Brindled and he took charge of my son the second Peter could crawl. Elvis was so gentle with him and never took his eyes off of my son.
Can't wait for more pics!!
He is sooo gentle the lady that fostered him had a 10 month old baby and he just sat by him and licked the babies feet.

I taught him to sit with a hand gesture today in about a hour!! He is very smart. Tommorrow I'm gonna get the long leash out and teach him the front yard boundries incase he gets out, this is very important being deaf.
You guys aren't gonna believe he is 5 months when I get these pics up....loading now.

Your dane is beautiful. What is his name? My husband has had danes all of his life. He had 2 that lived to be almost 13 and they were healthy up to the end. They are very gentle and loyal. The first 2 pictures are of our old dane Kassie. We were having pictures taken, we were standing around talking while we were waiting on the photographer and Kassie knew I had a treat in my pocket so she decided to beg. I didn't even notice her sitting up but luckily the photographer did. The third picture is of our current dane, Sheeba. We rescued her and after we had her a couple of days we found out she was the neice of our Kassie. It was meant to be
The fourth picture is of our boxer, just because she is cute.

LOL..talk about the lanky stage...She is huge! Looks like she fit right in too, all relaxed and happy...

Mproctor4: I love your pictures, 13 is almost unheard of for a Great Dane, something about the heart being too small for such a big body. I think I like the cropped ears best for looks, some folks like them natural and some cropped, but those dogs are just fantastic and sweet and the ears don't matter. The boxer must feel like a small dog to you after Having Great Danes.

Thanks Flower. We were very lucky with her life span. Frequently they get hip dysplasia or their stomach twist. I believe that danes are the only dogs whose stomachs aren't attached to the rib cage with ligaments (could be wrong about that). We try to be very careful to limit their activity after eating and always keep their food bowl elevated! Hubbie likes the ears cropped, I prefer them floppy only because I don't like the surgical procedure. I think they look good either way. The boxer can walk underneath the dane--and she is a small dane. The boxer however is the wild one, can't play rough enough with her. This will probably be our last Great Dane, only because we want to travel and take the dogs with us. It is hard to sqeeze kids and dogs all in one vehicle. I does kinda break my heart to think about not having another one, I love their gentle disposition.

I had a breeder of German Shepherds friend of mine and 4 of her dogs stomachs twisted, all died in one night, her teen daughter had fed them warm food on a very cold evening. That's all the explanation they came up with.
...Her kennels were outside with dog houses.
So Danes aren't the only ones it can happen to.

OMG---that is soooo sad! That poor girl. I've heard of it happening to other dogs, I've heard though that danes are more prone to it because they don't have the ligament supporting their stomach and other dogs do.
I have never heard of a temperature change causing that to happen.....something else to worry about.
I'm thinking I would disconnect the doorbell if the dog was scratching up the paint all the time! That would get old really fast.

Thanks for all the replies......have some disturbing news though.
He had a seizure about 2 hours ago, lasted only 30 seconds and we talked to the vet and everything, but we are very worried. He will be going to the vet tommorrow.

I'm sorry. I don't have any experience. But that is horrible news!
Yeah no experience with this either, I have been reading since it happened and it seems it can range from a very minor thing all the way to death. The vet said if it wasn't over 5 minutes not to panic. I can't sleep lol.

Ya, that period of confusion after a seizure is normal and he was what we would call post ictal. I use to work on a seizure unit.... humans.
Ask your vet when you go what's the correlation in seizures in humans verses dogs.
