Our Puffer "Puffed" today!!!

This is Sid, our puffer. He "puffed" today, for the FIRST time!!!! (Our big fish, Pearl, scared him. She's a Pink Tail Trigger, and she's cranky when she's hungry.)

Note: I know it's not healthy for it to "puff", it was just shocking!! We were in Jamaica last year, and we found one puffed up, at night. It was just fun to remember our trip....
Now I'm going to be hesitant, to post again.
(I think I'll even have a good cry.)

Nice pic, but a puffer "puffing up" is definetly not something to be proud of. Its a sign of stress, whether that be from you, a tankmate, water quality, etc..its not good. Obviously, this time it was from the Pink Tail Trigger, but if the trigger keeps it up, you're going to have to seperate the two. Puffing up is HIGHLY stressful to the fish, and in the confines of an aquarium, half the time, it kills the puffer. Its especially bad for it to see a flash, when you took a picture of it puffing up.

I just had to say OMG, and bet you did too! How amazing is that puff!
And also just have to ask..how big is the fish that scared him??!! He looks none to tiny, himself!

Why is everyone so amazed? Its highly stressful to the fish, and definetly not something to go, "Oooh...ahhh.." about.

Im sure it would puff up thousands of times in the wild with other animals trying to kill it.....

Key word:IN THE WILD. In the confines of an aquarium, where it cannot TRULY take shelter..its much, much more stressful.

It is so amazing to see a puffer puff up, although it is not good for them, it is very cool to see. If the pink tail trigger keeps it up, and continues to make the puffer puff, I would say you should remove him. A danger with a puffer puffing is they may inhale air, if they inhale air, sometimes they cannot deflate and it leads to a horrible demise. We had a dogface puffer that puffed up alot, but we couldn't find the reason why, however he didn't suffer and damage from it. Lisa, that is a GREAT pic of the puffer!!

That is a neat pic, but I'm glad I read the thread and didn't just look at the picture. I didn't know it was bad for a puffer to puff.

Yup..I realize that. However, there's a reason why you rarely see that, and you really, IMO, don't want to see that, knowing what it does to the animal.

Age doesn't matter, if someone is old enough to own a tank and animals, then they need to be responsible to know what is right and wrong.
Someone else recently posted a picture of their puffer that was blown up during a freshwater dip bath to kill ich. The guy got flamed bad and I was certainly one of them doing the flaming.
I don't think it should be shared or portrayed as something neat and exciting, it causes more nuts-ohs to try to do it to their fish.
For me, I personally get annoyed with seeing pictures of people taking and glorifying pictures of their puffers puffed out. It shows me they enjoy it and for me, I stress knowing that the fish is stressed.
I am proud to say that I have had only 1 occaision where my dog face puffer puffed up, the quick change of lighting in the room or a shadow spooked him and I felt bad. I talked to him while he settled down. You will NEVER find me posting pictures of my blown up boy on the internet. It is like advertising, I am a bad fish person. Not something to be proud of and should not encourage others to do so.
One might ask, well - if the bleeding hearts are so offended, then why do they read posts that indicate that their puffer blew up? The only reason is that I jump on the person to razz them and I try to make them feel bad about it. Thats right.
It is no better than the idiots that think it's neat to see a pit bull or a Doberman chained to a fence with a fat spiked collar on barking and snarling. They think it looks neat. I see a dog that is unhappy and probably not cared for properly and is lonely.
I have 3 Dobes and my dogs never look that way. But, you can be sure that if someone broke into my house, they would let you in....but you would never get out in 1 piece. Do I broadcast that in pictures, heck no.
The key is, don't glorify or find human enjoyment in the pain, stress or displeasure of other living things, human or animal.
1/2 of you will want to nuke me for my post, and the other half of you will say - right on.
The forum is about sharing opinions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

IMO, since Lisa hasn't replied, all flamers have done their day's work. I'm sure SHE didn't cause the fish to puff. I'm also pretty sure it's not possible to control a puffer's instinct.
I for one would like to see this site not be quite so judgemental. I have had nothing but kind responses and good feelings, but have seen the other side, too.

I swear every time a puffer puffing pic shows up its worse than tangs in a nano. Its not like she hid under the tank and popped out to puff the puffer. She has a puffer with an appropriate aggressive tank mate and it happened to puff. so what! is are facination suppose to be dwindle because its not good for the fish? Did you not see the thread topic and look yourself? Perhaps she should have a sit down with the trigger and puffer to resolve this crisis.
Oh and did you miss the part where it was her 1rst and only time she's seen her puffer puff?
