Out of Control Sponge growth

So I took my LR out of the water at my last cleaning (2 weeks ago) for about 10 minutes, then put it all back in, and the sponge has shown no signs of dying, or shrinking. In fact, I have some new patches.

One guy told me "if air exposure didn't kill it, then it is not sponge!" so I said "Well, what is it, then?" but he had no clue.

Oh well!

Pull the rock out and scrub the sponge off and rinse real good with water change water and then place the LR back into the tank
