over heating

my 40gl over heated to about 100* have assasi, snowflake,niger and a couple damsels.Unfortunatly the niger died.So far everybody else is ok.I have 3 T5 lights the actinc light failed.The light was very hot,I'm wondering if the light overheated the tank

most likely. if youve had your tank set up long enough for to house the fish you have and havent had problems it has to be a piece of equipment on the tank, or something new or malfunctioning near the tank.

Welcome to the board

Double check everything. Not just the lights, but also check your heater, and any pumps that could be causing it.
How do you have your lighting mounted on the tank?
Are you using glass tops to cover your tank or somthing?

Thanks for your reply, I've been keeping an eye on it. I have 3 T511 lights in 1 hood on a glass lid. There on a timer for 8hs so far so good

Get rid of the glass hood, its trapping the heat and blocking gas exchange.
