Overflow Box and return from sump

Newbie here. I purchased a Cpr 100(700 gal) overflow box. I used a Mag 9 (950 gal) pump for my return pump. It was recommended by the LFS. It’s about a 4 foot return to the tank with a few 90 degree bends in it. The problem was that the return pump was returning water faster than the overflow could handle it.
So what would be a good solution? The LFS will not let me return the pump since it has been used. So I could buy a smaller pump I guess. Which one should I buy? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You wouldn't have to buy a new pump, just add a valve into the plumbing so that you could control the flow that way....

ok i had the same problem, 1 i could have put a valve to stop the flow. but i needed another powerhead so i decided to make a apray bar. that cuts the flow by 30% just enough for me to use it. if its still to much u can use the ball valve.

Im going with the ball valve technique when i get mine and i just cant wait to spend hours trying to find the exact amount is the right amount to keep it the same in both tanks LOL

o boy, dont let squidd hear you talking about restricting pump output...

jobob is right on with the spray bar... if you've got a monster pump, why waste the flow and build a bunch of backpressure that will increase wear on the pump when you can just redirect some of the flow and do something constructive? waste not, want not...

Wel you make a good point. I could get a huge pump that funtions to pull water from the sump and use all of that water to power my entire circulation system. That would be nice to have.

its a piece of pvc pipe thats at the top of tank, and has holes in it for water to flow though. the water comes from the sump. and is sprayed back into the tank.
